I’d be interested to hear from current/recent students in the honors program. Pros/cons? How is the educational environment/does it help a large school feel small? Does it help group you with like minded students? Any thoughts/feedback from students or parents appreciated.
My daughter likes it so far. She has had some interesting honors classes/seminars, and has met people outside of the classes for her major. I would say it helps a large school feel smaller/more personal.
@STEMGirl19 my daughter loves the honors program.
Pros: *Honors dorm is recently updated and in a good location.
*You’ll get priority class registration (this is the biggest benefit in my opinion and it makes your life and schedule
so much easier!) May not be super beneficial first semester but you’ll definitely notice it when you register for
second semester.
*Honors students are invited to special events such as info sessions to discuss national scholarship
opportunities.
*Honors advisors in addition to the advisor within your college.
From what I’ve seen there are no cons. Honors requirements are not very intense.
The honors dorm is primarily honors students but not everyone in the dorm is in honors. This does help the school feel a bit smaller as you may also see some of the same faces in an honors class or honors seminar (required of 1st yr students).
If you wanted to take an intro level Chemistry class, for example, you could choose the honors version which would be maybe 25-30 students instead of 200 or so in the general Chem. The class will be more challenging. There are also unique classes that are not offered as “non-honors” with some really interesting topics.
My daughter has had a great experience with her honors advisor and meets with her instead of her other advisor.
Good luck!
Anyone in the honors program as a math major?
@newyorkmom2girl @3goldensmom sorry if this is a dumb question, but can I apply for the honors program if I wasn’t directly admitted/asked to join? My stats are very high but I applied late so not sure if that’s why I didn’t get in?
Yes, you can apply to Honors if you weren’t invited. Deadline is April 18, and notifications will be 4/22.
