Syracuse University Early Decision Thread Class of 2017

No I didn’t. I applied RD. I just want to know how competitive is the engineering program? because my stats aren’t that high lol.

Woooooooo! Received my acceptance last night :’)

D accepted into Newhouse. Praying financial package is hefty.

Hey guys, how holistically would you say SU (esp Newhouse…) looks at your application? I have pretty good ECs recs and standardized scores but my GPA isn’t so strong… I worked hard on the essay and answered it sincerely too but i’ve been freaking out here cause i can’t get an interview cause i’m from oregon and the nearest rep is in SoCal…any one have thoughts on this matter for all of you earlys/current students?

I applied ED to Newhouse and had a fair, but not a crazy over the top, amount of ECs and my GPA was a 3.92. I didn’t do an interview, but my common app essay was strong because I didn’t write a run of the mill college essay. I did topic of your choice and wrote about giving my mouse a bath in preschool… Heh, I think it was the sincerity and originality that got me in. I also tried to be as real and relatable as I could in the SU supplement and really show my passion for the school. Newhouse is competitive, as you already know, but I think they really appreciate when people aren’t afraid to go outside of the box and showcase their personality. I wouldnt worry about not getting an interview since you say your essay is pretty strong and sincere, but if you think that it could help them figure out who you are, then I’m sure you could call admissions and set up a phone or Skype interview. Good luck!!

Yeah, I did this essay where I paralleled giving a speech and driving for the first time and it kinda played out like a movie…for the supplement I just answered the questions concisely and honestly and I hope those all helped make the diff in my gpa (I have an UW 3.5 but a W 4.0?) but I guess we will see in mid March :(

Thanks for the advice about the interview though!!

For those who got accepted, please share your stats… thanks!

Has anyone who was accepted ED appealed their financial aid and received more money? I am asking because I can only describe the financial aid package that we received as inadequate.

got deans scholarship and a request for 2011 federal tax forms. Hoping the up the amount or D will have to decline early decision acceptance.

Don’t forget that the financial aid they are sending you is before consideration of the fafsa so you could always have the chance to receive more money. I would contact a financial aid advisor if you are extremely concerned. I will most likely be trying to contact one sometime next week.

Ain’t looking good :(

What is the admission rate for ED?

Sent from my LS670 using CC

77% for class of 2016

Whoa! That’s high!! Can’t wait to apply next year  #ED!

Same here. Financial aid not cutting it. Not even close.

I believe they look at a lot more than test scores and GPA. While my GPA was good, I had a fairly low ACT, but worked very hard and my essays and was accepted to Newhouse.
I agree with pickle, be sincere and specific about wanting to go to Newhouse!

@MSMDAD
Accepted to Newhouse, received no merit, (even though I’ve received merit from all other schools I’ve been accepted to), and barely any need based. Was seriously disappointing.
Have tried to appeal several times with no luck. The person who I interviewed with told me they would negotiate, we’ve found that’s not the case.
Good luck to you.

Do you think SU would take back my admissions if I got a 79 in a honors class… I struggled first quarter and I was able to bring my grade up a lot but not enough to make the B cutoff

My did really want to attend but I don’t believe it will be possible. So far the total financial aid package is around 14 grand. Leaving approx 40,000 on the table. We are a one income blue collar family. I really thought financial aid would help. Waiting to see if any grants are given. This could be very disappointing.
