@HappyDaddy, We are in the same boat as you. DD really wants to attend, but financial aid can only be described as disappointing and inadequate.

@worldforgetting, did you call them or did you appeal through their website? Both? Have you looked at more economical alternatives to Newhouse (e.g. Mizzou)?

We have not been told what our EFC would be. Annual income of 70,000 net. Not a lot for California. D would be first generation to attend and has a 2000+ SAT. Hope she (we) receive good news prior to Feb 15 when the expect a decision. Wife lost her job 4 years ago so our saving is nil. **** poor planning on my part.

@MSMDAD
The person I interviewed with gave me the number of a specific person in the financial aid department to call, saying that he knew the guy, and he would work with us. He didn’t return any of our phone calls. We ended up having to talk to a regular financial aid counselor who just said there was nothing they could do.
Also sent an email to the person I interviewed with as a last resort, haven’t received a reply.

My alternative is Ithaca (The Park School) who offered me a large merit scholarship and a good amount of need based. Still hard to give up the dream of Newhouse though.

I got into the dual degree program in Newhouse/iSchool. My GPA was a 3.5 unweighted, 3.9 weighted. I had a 2150 SAT, good essays, and plenty of journalism and social media experience. Couldn’t be happier. Go Orange!

They added 14+grand per semester in a SU grant after receiving and reviewing my 2011 taxes. I will send them 2012 ASAP because it shows a 13 grand decrease.

happydaddy! that’s fantastic. did you appeal your initial amount? if so, to whom did you direct your appeal for more aid? my D has applied RD and I’m not anticipating a great deal of financial aid or merit (according to this thread).

No I did not appeal. I appears they received our info in stages so the awards came in stages. Looks like everything is working out. My DD is extremely excited.

How much of that 44k is loans? I recieved 38k in Syracuse grant, but I still haven’t turned in my NCP Profile. So, as of yet that is my finantial aid package. I really do not want to have loans!

If you feel comfortable, can you put the breakdown of your financial package?

Also, congrats on the 44k, I have followed this post since you were worried about even sending your DD to Syracuse!

What do you think would be the average financial aid package for a hispanic family making $30,000 a year?
I plan on applying to syracuse in the fall ED and was wondering what my expected financial aid package would be.

My D got admitted RD and was offered a very generous fin’l aid package. I’m a single parent of two. I will be paying next to nothing for her to attend Syracuse. We are very elated to say the least
