Syracuse University Merit Aid

Hey everyone! I am considering applying to Syracuse for Newhouse’s Film Program. I know there’s no way to actually predict this, but could anyone give me an estimate for how much merit aid Syracuse would give me? Again, I understand that this question would be better suited for admissions, which is why I have asked admissions reps through phone calls and emails, reps at college fairs, and reps on school visits on multiple occasions and have been given the same vague, inconclusive answer every time (“We are not allowed to say. It is given to you upon admission.”). I just want to have an estimation of whether the money they are giving is substantial enough so that it would be affordable for me to attend. I was hoping that someone who already attends SU (if you still come on this website), or a parent with kids that attend could help me determine an estimate, or my chances to be invited to apply for the Coronat Scholarship?

here are my stats to help gain a better picture of me as a student:

ACT: 32
UW GPA: 3.81
Weighted: 4.0
IB Diploma Student
AP/IB heavy workload from sophomore year on
I am a black female

Extracurriculars:
Vice President of SGA
Beta Club Secretary
NHS Member
Part time job at Chick Fil A
Began my own food drive
Camp Counselor for Girl Talk Organization (a group that helps to instill confidence in middle school age girls)
4 Year Varsity Soccer

I thought my personal statement for the common app was pretty strong and illustrated my career goal to work in film and I felt that my supplemental essays were also very good.

Thanks guys! Again, I don’t expect a direct estimate, just a range of what you think the school would give me in Merit.

You have a good shot at a merit scholarship. Definitely Founders, Chancellors, or Deans scholarship. The Coronat full tuition scholarship is for Arts and Sciences. There is an 1870 full tuition scholarship available for the other schools. You likely would need a very high ACT or SAT as well as maintain a high GPA. The full tuition scholarships are very competitive. From the information provided, you may be offered a $25k yearly Founders scholarship. SU is very holistic with admissions so I can only guess.
Good luck!

I agree with funfatdaddy. My daughter received a $15k Chancellor’s Scholarship as a dual major in Whitman Business and Newhouse TRF. Her scores were not as high as yours (SAT 750 verbal, 620 Math) , but we think the essay were very strong. we were hoping for $20k, so a little disappointed. I think you are shoo in for $20k and could get $25k. Don’t forget to apply for the Maxwell public policy scholarship. We did and received an additional $2k per year. You don’t have to be a member of the Maxwell school. A side benefit is you get to live in the Maxwell Learning community which is outstanding! Best of luck!
