Well I got into both and both offered a decent financial aid package. However, I am just curious if I were to go UB or Binghamton the pell grant and TAP would cover my tuition so I would not have to take out loans. SU on the other gave me 10k scholarship and a 12k grant + pell and TAP. I will still have taken out approximately 20k in loans by the time I graduate. I would like to either major in finance or Entrepreneurship. I am just wondering if it's worth taking on so much debt and go to a great school like SU or go to UB or BU without taking on any additional loans.
Syracuse may have an edge for finance.
But when you’re speaking about 20K in loans, do you mean subsidized loans? Or do you mean EXTRA loans (on top of federal Stafford loans?)
20K over 4 years can be paid back, especially if you major in finance and do well. It becomes a matter of being debt adverse or not. I’m really not sure Syracuse, on its own, is worth the difference. DO look into graduate outcomes, support & learning services (to see how much free help there is for students who want to do their utmost for great grades), and campus culture.
Between Buffalo and Bing, I’d give Bing an edge for finance. Are you a direct admit to the SOM?
Note that 20K “extra” is undoable and not worth considering.
Around 16k in subsidized and 4k in Perkins loans. I actually ended up choosing against Bing because they’re requiring I pay out of state tuition because I didn’t graduate high school in New York (A stupid rule). So it’s between buffalo and SU now. What is SOM if you don’t mind my asking.
Both Binghamton and University at Buffalo are SUNY Universities, so I’m a bit confused how one is charging OOS Tuition and the other is not? Do either of your parents live in New York? How did you qualify for TAP?
I’m curious how a student receiving, what appears to be full TAP and Pell Grant (~$11K), will be able to cover room and board, books and other miscellaneous charges (~$16K - $17K/yr) without student loans at either UB or BU. SUNY Tuition Credit/how much? The gap at SU is about $30K/yr. You said you will only need $5K per year in loans ($20K over 4-years), so where is the other $25K per year coming from?
University at Buffalo = $9,770/$16,375 Tuition/Other (in-state)
Binghamton University = $9,176/$17,417 Tuition/Other (in-state)
Syracuse University = $43,440/$19,904 >> ($63K- [$10K + $12K + $11K = $33K]) - Tuition/Other
School of Management
So, it’s 16K Federal, 4K Perkins, for all 4 years - not per year, right?
I found that odd as well. But apparently bighantom has it’s own stupid rules as both my parents live in a foreign country. and I’m transfering so it’ll be 3 years max not 4 years.
You got it. 20k for probably 3 years as I am transfering.
If you are eligible for tap you would be eligible for tap at any of the SUNY schools. I think the criteria is the same across the SUNYs for these funds.
That’s not what binghamton said. I guarantee I told them and they specifically declined. With all due respect can we just move on from that topic. Binghamton are a bunch of jackals.
Based on what you said, I’d go with Syracuse. 20K over 3 years is doable, and well under the federal limit - unless Buffalo offers you perks and opportunities Syracuse doesn’t.
I guess my point was not to suggest that the one school that said that you are not eligible for the funds is incorrect but my suggestion is to ensure you are eligible at the other schools if you decide to attend a SUNY. SU is obviously the best if you can swing it.
I can see why you would want to move on from the the topic, since the story you weaved makes no sense. In one thread you said that both your parents were dead, now they are living outside of the US, or simply outside of New York State. The cost numbers doesn’t add up for a student with zero EFC…you do realize that? Money is coming from somewhere…
My guess is you attend high school outside the US and probably gain US citizenship from birth, then lived aboard until relocating back to the states for college. Binghamton FA folks understand what you are trying to do (they have your academic records, etc.), which is to gain in state tuition after attending Community College in NY State for two years.
Lived* in a foreign country prior to my arrival here. They passed away a little over a year ago. Insensitive jerk. My parents EFC is 0 but I was left with a small inheritance and work when I can. Before you go around jumping to conclusions get the facts. Looking up my other threads? Have a life much?
To be honest, 20k total loans isn’t that bad. You can even apply to scholarships to offset the cost or get a summer job. Syracuse is definately worth the extra 5k a year in this case over buffalo. It is really no competition. It has a better reputation, better alumni network, better athletics, better social life, greek life is there if you want it (buffalo greek life is basically like joining a gang from what I heard…). Yeah so go 'Cuse.
I think people are trying to be helpful but when the information provided is conflicting it is difficult to interpret. My impression is that people look at past posts to try to be as helpful as possible and to better understand the situation. The alternative is to provide advice that may be misguided due to inadequate information. That would not help you at all. I think people look up past threads to help not to be nosey.
Keep in mind that your financial aid packages are estimates. Unless you can provide birth certificates showing that both of your parents are deceased (and that would have made you independent for federal aid ) as long as your parents are not NYS residents and physically present in NYS, you are not going to get TAP. While it may be in your financial aid package, HESC is never going to give the monies to the college (then you will owe whatever the TAP amount is).
If your parents are deceased, I don’t understand why you are not fighting to be an independent student. Syracuse does not meet 100% demonstrated need so your are not going to get additional loans outside of what is in your financial aid packages unless your parents sign for a Plus loan, which they cannot do if they live out of th3e country or are deceased. If you are independent for federal aid, you can get an additional 4K in loans because your will not be eligible for a PLUS loan.
Tuition at Syracuse is 43k, you have a package that is giving you 33k in aid. You can take a 5.5k loan (9.5k if you are an independent student). You still need a place to live. How are you paying room/board/books etc?
I am surprised that you have not been flagged for verification yet. But based on you saying your parents are deceased and you live on your own and are self supporting, you will be verified before you get an actual dime in aid. IF your parents are alive, you are not going to get any actual federal or state aid until your parents upload the IRS data retrieval tool or send in a copy of the IRS transcript. ON your transcript it will show where your parents reside.
You may have a problem being categorized as in-state for SUNY Buffalo for the same reasons that Bing is not granting you in-state tuition.
Again, if your parents are not NYS residents and physically living in NYS you will not receive TAP. You will not get a penny in financial aid until all of your stuff is verified through the IRS and the NYS tax rolls.
