Does anyone have any thoughts about this program for an incoming 2012 freshman?

i considered this program before my first semester last year. having met many people who did summerstart, i’m glad that i didn’t choose to go. while this is a nice opportunity to meet new friends before the school year starts and get a couple of credits, many people who do summerstart get caught being friends with only those who they went to summerstart with. that kind of takes the fun out of the first semester of college, which is designed for meeting new people and getting to know the wide variety of students at the school. You do get kind of a bump in credits from summerstart, but it’s not really that important because the course offerings are very limited.

one situation under which i would seriously recommend summerstart, though, is if your child isn’t prepared to take WRT 105 and needs to take WRT 104 first. summerstart is a great place to take remedial classes and catch up without being embarrassed during the school year.

overall, if you’re looking for a way to kind of introduce your child to SU, i’d say that your best bet is to do one of the preorientation programs rather than summerstart. preorientations don’t tend to create cliques before the year starts, but they do give a chance to do a few fun things on and off campus. they also let the student move in to their own dorm early so they can meet RAs, find the dining hall, and get to know a couple people in the dorm.

Thanks “vicious dirt”. You have a well balanced view of SU, and are very articulate. What are your thoughts on an ED student attending a spring reception? It appears to be for RD undecided students.
