Would be interested in some viewpoints. Daughter got into Syracuse (arts and sciences-writing and rhetoric) but not into Newhouse which was her first choice. She also got into Fordham. If she goes to Syracuse its with the idea of trying to transfer into Newhouse after the first year. Would like some feedback, from anyone that knows, regarding the two schools and their communications programs. While Fordham doesnt have the name recognition of the Newhouse program, it appears to be a fairly decent program and potentially the nearness to NYC may outweigh the name recognition of Newhouse ( in regards to internships and potential postgrad job opportunities). She's visited both schools and likes them both. The key issue is ultimately in terms of a potential career in magazine publishing, how they would compare. I'm sure (and she agrees) that which ever she goes to, she would end up loving. The question becomes how much of a difference (all other things being equal) will one program make over the other. Thanks in advance. (btw I tried posting something similar on the Fordham pages but got a lot of the choose Fordham due to weather comments)

Since Syracuse just got over 70 plus inches of snow, the weather comments are understandable. My D, who is a Newhouse sophomore, originally applied to Fordham two years ago. She was not impressed with the communications program which seemed to be very weak at the time, but that could have changed drastically. I would look at the course catalog on line and actually see which courses are offered in your D’s interest areas. NYC internships may be an advantage but my D has gotten great experience right at SU. (As an aside, my son went to NYU, and had some interesting jobs but never got any of those wonderful NYC internships everyone talks about. When he did find a great post-graduation job in NYC this past year, it was due to all of his summer experiences right here at home). I have heard good things about the communication and rhetoric program at SU so you may want to actually visit and talk to some current students in the program.
