Hi all,
I was accepted into the Syracuse VPA, as a communications design major which I am very excited about! My sister is currently a freshman at Syracuse, but she's an International Relations major in Maxwell. I was wondering if anyone could tell me about VPA and their experinces there, and more specifically about the Communication Design major?
Thank you so much!

Hey!
My name is Leeanna Cota and I am a senior interior design major here at SU. Even though I’m not a communications design major I can give you some info on what its like to be in VPA and the design department. First of all, all of the design majors are located at the warehouse which is pretty cool because its a whole building dedicated to the design department and we’re all there together. The warehouse also has some really great resources like the wood shop,a computer lab, and print/plot lab (an area used thoroughly by communications majors), all of which are pretty advanced and can cover almost any of your project needs. There is also a cafe; the best one on campus in my opinion. The warehouse is also located right outside of armory square: a cute area of Syracuse with all kinds of restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, etc. So that’s a little insight into where you’d be spending the MAJORITY of your time here at SU.

As far as being in VPA, my favorite part about it is that I get a really personal and individualized education while still being part of a larger university. VPA isn’t just an “art department” it is an art school and it really feels that way in classes. All of the majors are relatively small, interior design is one of the largest one and there are only around 25 students per year. Also, there are two professors to every 15 students so you’re able to form a really strong connection to your professors and receive a really thorough education.
So we get the best of both words, the intimate design education in small studio settings, and the large “hollywood” college experience with the pretty campus, big sports games, and all kinds of academic opportunities.

So even though design is at the warehouse and our classes are small I don’t feel separated from the university at all. I have many friends in all of the other schools here and its so easy to get involved in clubs, activities, and all the events.

As far as com. design (more formally called communications design) goes, what I know is that it is REALLY intense, but the results are worth it. Arguably the most intense major in VPA. The com design majors work super hard and are up to all hours of the night all of the time, but they love what they do and they come out of college really successful.

So I hope that helps! Good luck with your college decision!

Hi! I’m a high school senior in PA & have been very interested in SU, mostly because of Newhouse & my excitement concerning communications. However, recently I’ve been looking at interior design, in which I see SU is also a top contender in. I have visted SU, but I only looked at Newhouse & ignored the other schools, which was probably a mistake.
Sooo, I have a couple questions, VPAchat, if you wouldn’t mind?? (:
-Does VPA have career placement/help?
-Are there a lot of good, solid internships?
-Is it challenging?
-I’m an almost-decent sketch artist, but I love being creative & designing, as well as making a space workable… Is that okay for interior design?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I’m really just… very, very confused on anything college.
