Syracuse vs Tulane

Hi! I’m a senior in high school, and I’ve narrowed my choices down to Syracuse and Tulane. At Syracuse I was accepted into the Newhouse Whitman dual degree, which is the main reason I am considering it. I recently visited Tulane, and loved the school. However, I’m concerned that I’m not doing what’s best for me in terms of major, since the dual is such a good program. There is still a chance that I’d want to switch majors, meaning that I’d have to switch out of the dual program and it would go to waste. I received the same amount of merit from both schools, so cost isn’t necessarily a factor, the main consideration besides program is distance (I’m from the tri-state area.)

If anyone has any insight into which of the two schools has a better reputation, social scene, and will set me up for a successful future, or just any insight in general, please share! TIA!

Hi! What exactly is your major at Newhouse vs Tulane? I’m currently a Newhouse student and in my opinion and from what I have heard, there is essentially no better communication school in the world than Newhouse. It is known globally to be the best, and when employers see the Newhouse name on your resume they are very impressed. The Newhouse alumni is also known as the Newhouse mafia because of how powerful and how many connections Newhouse students have across the globe. Tulane may be a higher ranking school than Syracuse, but if you got into Newhouse and want a career in media, communications, entertainment, Newhouse is probably the better option as no communication school seems to top Newhouse. Both Syracuse and Tulane have huge party scenes. Majority of people I know at Cuse rush and party often. Both schools are two of the biggest party schools in the country. Everyone I know loves Syracuse, however, its just not for me, and for that reason I have made the tough decision to transfer to a different school. However, if you want to go to the 1# communications school, go to Newhouse.

Congratulations on being admitted to two great universities.

Both schools are strong socially. I would likely give the social edge to Syracuse because of its big time sports, but it truly depends on what you like.

Tulane has a slightly stronger academic reputation, but you are correct that Newhouse at Syracuse is truly a special program. If you like business, too, the dual program sounds like a winner. Similar to the way I feel with social life, each college is solid, but I would give a slight advantage to Syracuse.

You can’t go wrong with either school, but I would lean toward Syracuse.

I’m a Newhouse alum. I’m not anywhere near what I studied. Nor did I get a good education. That was year’s ago. I had a friend who had to drop out due to money. Ended up at a small public in the Rockies. I visited. She had a much better education. In fact, they got to do gain many times more experience on camera. Sounds like you’re not broadcast and even if you are, with phones, the world has changed. You can do so much more.

Go to the right school for you. Many will change majors - even those who think they won’t. If you are hard working and ambitious, you will make your mark.

Both schools are great names - but even people who go to lesser schools, with hard work, grit, and determination will make their mark.
