Could someone tell me which one of the two would be better for English: Syracuse or UC Riverside? Money is not a factor since my friend who got in got fellowships from both. She is an international and is admitted to the PhD program.

Syracuse. UCR doesn't even compare.

Thank you very much. But could you explain your reasons please? Everyone here is goading my friend to go to UCR since its ranked much higher (30ish as compared to Syracuse's 60ish ranking in the USNews).

Both schools have solid English departments. Both schools treat graduate students well, although budget problems in the UC system can be problematic for grad studentsand future funding. If her plan is to teach in the U.S. after graduation, Syracuse may open a few more doors on the east coast, however. UC Riverside is considered one of the lower ranking UC schools but again, I have heard from grad students/PHD candidates there that they felt they were treated well.

A major factor to consider, depending on where she is coming from, is weather. Syracuse is COLD and SNOWY. I still remember my senior year there when we had over 150 inches of snow. In fact, it snowed on graduation day in May. Another factor is cost of living. It is probably going to be cheaper to live in Syracuse than in Riverside/Southern California so she might want to take that into consideration as well.

Honestly, I think both schools have decent English programs and it will be more a matter of lifestyle than anything.

My friend is from India, so weather could be a factor. Anyway, a great thanks for the info.
