Syracuse VS USC

which school has a better communications program??? help please !!!!!!

i am currently a student at syracuse and am at the newhouse school of communications. i got admitted for USC for the fall, but not for annenberg but i would eventually apply to get into that school.

I live in Boston as a result I’ve heard more about Syracuse’s communications program
but USC is a very good school and a better place IMO to live than Syracuse so I would choose USC (plus what happens if you decide not to major in communications?)

USC is not a better place to live in. For one, you have to deal with way more crime. The two people I know who went to USC, one had 3 or so bikes stolen. The other had his car stolen.

well compared to Syracuse, Syracuse has its bad spots too
at least in my opinion, Los Angeles is better than Syracuse

If you don’t like the cold, go to LA. I rather live in LA any day, but I wouldn’t mind living in Syracuse. There is also more to do in LA.

Transferring is going to cost you some credits. Transferring within USC (and that’s not a given) is likely going to mean taking additional course requirements. So, unless you have a lot of credits to transfer, you may be looking at the five year plan on top of uncertainty about getting into a like program. Are you planning to do study abroad? That’s more time you won’t be in Syracuse anyway.

If you had been admitted to USC’s Communications program, I’d say go for it but this doesn’t seem to be a solid plan - that is unless you have significant doubts about studying communications.

Syracuse has a better communications program, but the weather sucks. I guess it depends what is more important to you.

That said, I knew tons of people from So Cal when I was a student at Syracuse, and they handled the weather better than I did.

actually on second thought I would stick where you are at Syracuse, you aren’t even guaranteed into the school you want at USC and Syracuse has a better communications program so why switch?

I misread it and thought you were a high school senior.

I guess I was mistaken as well. If you are already at SU I would recommend staying there unless it is absolutely terrible for you. Syracuse’s communications program is generally considered to be superior to USC’s.

I read it, but I think you should still stay put. Syracuse is a great school and unless you hate it why transfer? You already made all your friends and just got there. My other post was just me personally, but just about weather.

well i went to usc today and they told me that in the fall during orientation i can switch my major into annenberg. weather is not an issue, so i am just trying to figure out which school has a better communications/public relations program. any ideas?

Most people agree that Syracuse is better. I personally would like USC a lot more for the weather and the babes, haha.

I don’t know how much merit ^^ has, but it does place Syracuse quite high on its list.

I’d go wherever you feel a better vibe from. If you aren’t happy at Syracuse (which I’m assuming since you applied for a transfer) and you like USC then I’d go where you are happy.

this thread is crazy. USC is just an all around better school.

thanks for the ranking… i looked everywhere for communications program rankings and it was so hard to find a recent one

USC is better for pretty much everything except communications. Syracuse’s Newhouse school is one of the top 3 in the country.

USC is my favorite school in the nation, but this is right ^^^^^

do you have rankings to show that newhouse is top 3 in the nation? or what is it that makes you say that?

Nope, I don’t. AFAIK there hasn’t been a real reputable ranking of communications programs for several years now. It is generally understood, however, by those familiar with undergrad communications programs that the top 3 in the country are Northwestern, Mizzou, and Syracuse. Heck, most people here will tell you that much.

Is there anything in particular making you unhappy at Syracuse other than doubts about its communications program being one of the best? Because if there isn’t, stay at the Cuse. Even if Syracuse’s communications program isn’t much better than USC’s (Which is debatable, most including me would say Syracuse’s is better), they are definitely peers. Transferring is a hastle and not worth it to go to a school that has a negligibly better rep with a program most likely worse than yours now. If you have other gripes about Syracuse (You said it isn’t the weather tho, what else is bad?), then this could be different. I’m interested as a future student too haha.
