Syracuse???

Hey everyone! I decided I needed more middle schools, and Syracuse seems to be right on. I want to go to a big school, good athletics, in or near city, but I've heard some negative things about it. I heard Syracuse the city sucks, the campus is ugly (I don't want to go to an ugly campus), and that its coooold there. I am from Chicago so I am used to the cold but still.... Anyway, if any of you know anything about the school, please help me! If it weren't for these things that I've heard I would definately be applying there... so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!!!

"I want to go to a big school, good athletics, in or near city"

If that's your criteria, then Syracuse would be a great school for you.

Syracuse is cold, but if you're from the midwest, it's not a culture shock. Just imagine about a month more of winter, and that's Syracuse.

The Campus is not ugly at all. There is great architecture all around campus. Many pretty buildings and greenery.

As for the city, there are it's good parts, mainly where the campus is. And there are plenty of things to do. It's an urban city, kind of a mini Chicago.

I don't know what school you are applying to, but it definitely has it's strengths in departments. Check out the Syracuse forum for more comments, where some speak of their visits to the university.

Well, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Yes, there are some very nice buildings, but, in my humble opinion, most of the campus isn't that pretty when compared to some really pretty campuses such as Cornell, Haverford etc. IT almost seem like a city within a city. In short, it give the feel of a city school.

Academically, it has its strengths and weaknesses. You really need to check it out. Read my "overview" of Syracuse found at the top of the Syracuse forum.

The Syracuse campus is very attractive...nice quads...beautiful buildings...located on a hilltop overlooking and adjacent to the city of Syracuse. I do not think the campus itself has the feeling of a city school. It could be relaocated to a suburban or rural area and fit right in. It is not an urban campus like Boston U, NYU, Columbia, and George Washington. No, the campus is not as pretty as Cornell. The downhill side of campus is buffered from a rather old residential part of the city by a commercial area (Marshall St) with restaurants and shops. Student housing is located on the uphill side and is adjacent to a suburban area. In addition to the uphill and downhill sides there is the Carrier Dome side which is on the edge of a steep hill with a nice overlook of the city. The remaining side of campus is adjacent to a city park.

The medium-size city of Syracuse has its charms. There is a large pedestrian mall with shops and restaurants next to the science museum and IMAX theater. Dinosaur Barbeque open pit is a fun restaurant where the waitresses call you honey and you can hear some good blues music on weekends. There is a divided highway at the bottom of the hill below campus with a lot of good restaurants (e.g. Delmonco's) and shopping malls. The Carousel Mall along a lake will quell any symptoms of "mall withdrawal"...nice movie complex there. There is a great Irish pub (kinda far from campus) Coleman's where the street lights are upside down so green is on the top. Syracuse has a couple of good professional theater groups (e.g. Syracuse Stage). Syracuse is near wine country (for mom and dad) and just a few hours from NYC and Boston. Skiing one or two hours away.

Syracuse is not paricularly cold in winter. Temps mostly in the 20s and 30s. They get some lake effect snow. It is quite beautiful when the snow is fresh. The northern midwest is where it gets cold, not along the great lakes which moderate winter temps.
