Syracuse

Hi,
I am very interested in Syracuse University, for Graphic Design. After looking over their website, I saw to programs; one in their arts department and one is their communications program. I know that I would not have to submit a portfolio if applying to Newhouse (communications), but besides that, what is the difference?

I remember looking the commincation design program in their school of Visual and Performing Arts vs. Graphic Design at NewHouse. Here is my take:

Newhouse is very print media focused. You will learn a lot about graphic design as it applies to newspaper and magazines. The Communication Design program at VPA seems a bit more broad based. In addition, you can take some courses or even major in Advertising Design, which would allow for jobs with ad agencies. Frankly, I think that Syracuse has it backwords. Ad Design and Communication Design should have been in NewHouse and Graphic Design should have been with the College of Visual and Performing Arts. However, it is what it is.

Secondly, Newhouse had many more liberal arts requirements over that of VPA. Thus, you can take more technical art courses at VPA since you don't have those spots filled up with liberal arts. On the other side, you probably might get more writing and researching type of work (papers) at Newhouse.

My daughter attends Syracuse University for Graphic Arts at Newhouse. She went to visit Syracuse looking at the arts department. She was surprised that the program was considered more of a fine arts major, requiring that first year of all art classes. Also they had the portfolio requirements that included mostly drawings. She is not a big artist and on the tour discovered Newhouse. The major has a lot of liberal arts requirements which is the type of education she preferred.

There are several options within Newhouse that you can choose in your sophomore year, including advertising, advertising photography, just photography and graphic arts.

She is enjoying all her Newhouse classes.

I think it might help if you visit and find out which program better suits what you would like to learn. Good luck!
