t.o- HELP!

i just read an article on t.o. It seems ridiculously hard...and not worth the time/effort since there's a "it's not about the D, it's about the intellectual pursuit" kind of feel to it. are there any current students who are in it or can comment about it? is it as hard as it sounds? (still time to do social things?)

I'm doing TO too...so bump =)

It really isn't that bad. The rumors of it are exaggerated. There is definitely time to do social stuff, that isn't an issue at all. It is largely about intellectual pursuit, but it is a lot of fun.

What's T.O?

How many credits are each TO class? I've looked at the TO booklet and have gone to the TO site online but they don't explain everything fully. I know that there are 4 required courses you have to take and two writing courses, which are linked to the core courses. Then, are there two extra elective-type courses you can take? How does this work in terms of scheduling? How many courses do you take freshman year, sophomore year, etc.?
Ahh sorry for overwhelming you with questions - but I'd appreciate it if anyone could answer any of those!
Thank you =)

TO is Thematic Option- it's like honors

oh ok thanks

The amount of credits for TO are exactly the same as normal GE credits- four per class. For your first semester you will take Writing 111 and Core 102. Second semester you will take Writing 112. Other than that, you can take the Core classes whenever you want. This is about the same as GE's except you will get done with your writing requirement earlier.

Wait...but I've heard that alot of people can finish in Freshman year. So how would that work?

Another question - is the writing class also 4 credits or is just attached to the Core class?
BEcuase I wanted to take two of the Core classes first semester and one of the attached writing classes..will that be what most people do?

You would take three TO classes both semesters. Ex. Core 111, 102, and 101 first semester, and Core 112, 103, and 104 the second semester. It is possible, and many people do it, but it is a heck of a lot of TO for a year.

The writing class is also four credits. It is attached to the writing class content wise, but not credit wise.

Don't you take 111, 102, and 104 then 112, 103, and 101? You got 104 and 101 mixed up.

It doesn't matter when you take the other 100's. I took 101 first, I'm taking 104 next, and I'll do 103 later.

Another question - what is this about the 2 elective TO classes? Are those required?

I know it doesn't really matter, but I didn't know freshmen could take 101/103 fall semester. Most people I knew who took 3 TO classes in the fall took 102, 111, and 104.

I think they didn't offer anything else, they probably filled up. I don't know about next year's students, though. You could very well be right!

How many classes are there all togehter for TO...6 or 8?

Six, with to more that aren't specifically TO classes, but are chosen with the help of your TO advisor. That part is complicated, and sort of hard to explain.

Nikara,
question: what is the avg class size in non-TO lower division classes & what % of classes are taught by non-professors? are most frosh-soph classes large lecture classes with smaller discussion groups? what has been your experience?
