I am not sure which one to buy… This would basically be for local outings in Boston, and maybe if necessary off campus employment. Other than that, what is the real need for one, and is it worth the money?

if your going to get one, get the 70 dollar monthly linkpass. however if your living on campus i doubt you would need one. just pay per trip and it should be less than that per month unless you are using it 5 plus days a week

I agree with what jacob said. The semester pass is pretty pricy and it assumes you use it a LOT. Boston is pretty walkable so there are many times where you wouldn’t need it.

BU has a free shuttle bus that covers the whole campus and even goes to Symphony Hall (I recognize your username from the music major forum so I think you’ll appreciate that info!). Your student will mostly walk and use the free shuttle. They will use the T as well but not enough to justify the cost of a pass. Get a Charlie Card and load it with some money and it can be reloaded as needed. The Charlie Card gives a discount compared to just paying the fare each time you ride (which is called a Charlie Ticket). I think they will explain this at orientation but you can also check out the public transit website at mbta.com.

I am purchasing the semester pass because I live in the area, have friends going to college in the area and plan on exploring the city. Be aware that T prices have risen and adding $10-$20 to your card when you feel necessary goes pretty quickly. Another thing is if you have a $20 bill all of that money is going on the Charlie Card you cannot make change at the T.
