Tabor Academy Q&A

A question about Model United Nations:

Tabor has a Model UN program that is offered as an after-school extracurricular (like a sport) in the Winter. In the past few years Tabor has gone to international conferences in Dublin a few times, Paris and there was talk of organizing to go to the Hague. Also they go to conferences at Yale and MIT during the year.

A question about selectivity and ranking:

I wouldn’t trust boardingschoolreview, as they said it’s terribly outdated to begin with and also I know that Tabor purposefully doesn’t publish and update their acceptance rates and SAT scores because they don’t want students to base their decisions solely off those types of factors rather they want them to find the right type of school. I went there and I don’t even know the most recent admissions data, but I know that the acceptance rate is significantly lower than Kent, Hill and Canterbury but is more comparable to Loomis Chaffee.

I applied to, was accepted to and turned down some of the HADES (if we have to use that acronym) schools, the academic environment at Tabor was something that I connected to in a way I didn’t find at those other schools. I know and have friends that went to those schools, thought that would be enough to get them into their top choice school and ended up being devastated when acceptances came out, it’s not all about HADES and that’s why I hate grouping schools like that. It seems like so many kids on here are getting so focused on the name rather than the school and refuse to realize that to get into a top university these days you’re going to have to work equally as hard no matter what prep school you go to, but if you work hard it will pay off.

That being said, if are even thinking of being going into marine science, not applying to Tabor would be a terrible mistake. The marine science program is unparalleled anywhere on the New England prep school scene and even in the nation. Though these programs are incredibly strong, I went to Tabor and (regrettably) never took a single marine science class. I am now in college and Tabor undoubtedly is the reason for my success and as PrincipalV stated, a Tabor education is not a cakewalk.

If you must compare it to the HADES, however, Boston Magazine posted a US News and World Report style ranking of MA schools and Tabor was between Deerfield and Concord, on a list of more than 50 schools.

How is the academic support for those who may need help with study skills or just more structure to keep them focused?

How are the science programs which are not marine oriented?

Given the location and water orientation, can I assume there are no skiing trips?

Thanks Periwinkle for helping out.

How is the academic support for those who may need help with study skills or just more structure to keep them focused?

The quote above should give you a good idea about one huge resource Tabor students have. All freshman take a course their first semester called “Strategies for Success” which is kind of a tutorial in adapting to the academic life at a school with such rigorous work. So that helps with students adapting to the new environment, and then there are tons of other resources such as daily extra help sessions before classes and help with teachers whenever you need it. I rarely say anything is impossible, but it is extremely hard to “fall through the cracks” at Tabor; if you need help it will be there.

How are the science programs which are not marine oriented?

They’re great. A whole new math and science center just opened about two years ago that has such great technology and resources for science and math classes, like plasma screens and laptops in every classroom and all new lab spaces. The non-marine classes range from freshman Biology to levels of Physics I could never begin to understand.

Given the location and water orientation, can I assume there are no skiing trips?

Actually there are, in the winter there are usually a few planned trips to mountains around the MA/NH/VT area to go skiing for the day or weekend. I never went on one, so I don’t have the specifics but if you’re worried about missing time on the mountain, you’re in luck.

I just found this new student tour of Tabor on youtube, and thought it might be helpful for any prospective students or parents trying to find out more information.

hi,
i am looking at this high school. i would love to attend it but, it is very expensive. I was wondering if you could give me some information about the financial aids. I know that there is a $25, 000 grant but is this $25,000 per year or for all 4 years? are there any scholarships available (scholarships to tabor) how much do the books and supplies for one year usually cost? thanks so much.
