I have to respond to the comment about Taft weekends. My D lives very far from Taft and has plenty to do on the weekends. You must remember that a weekend is only Saturday night, since they have classes on Saturday morning. A weekend or two ago, our D called on Sunday and told us about her Saturday: classes in the morning, got a quick lunch bite, ran to the gym for her squash match, watched the other squash matches, the varsity boys basketball game, the jv girls ice hockey game, had dinner in the dining hall, ran to the laser tag game and then ended the night at the dance in the black box theater. Sunday breakfast does not begin until 11:00 am in order to encourage the kids to sleep in. Sunday is spent hanging out in the dorm, watching movies, doing laundry, and doing homework. As stated in earlier posts, Taft is a great community: challenging academically without the competitiveness of other schools, a caring and devoted faculty, and a warm and outgoing student body. Hope this helps.

i used to go to taft until very recently, and i absolutely loved the school.

if i have one complaint, it’s that the school is very concerned with it’s image. but it shouldn’t be too much of a concern… depending on the person.

just wanna say, from someone who went to taft, that’s a really great place. i loved it. :)

I am applying to Choate, Loomis, and Taft. I visited Taft about three months ago. I thought there were some pluses and minuses-- firstly, the campus was quite compact. There were only about six (if I remember correctly) buildings. This could be useful during cold New England winters, but on the downside it can feel a bit cramped at times. I thought the dorms were a bit small, and the common rooms were somewhat outdated. Then again, I only saw one dorm. During my interview, the admissions officer told me, “Schools like Choate have more spread out, college-like campuses and Taft has a compact one. Both schools have pros and cons, it simply depends on what’s right for you.” Taft had a nice library and gym. Also, something no one else has mentioned yet, Taft has an AMAZING video production room. Apparently the teacher built it himself-- there was a raised platform with computers on it, and a large bay window overlooking Taft’s pond. There were twigs with sparkling, golden leaves protruding from them and it was decorated to look like something Tolkien would imagine. I honestly thought it was a small slice of heaven. Anyways, it really depends on your preference in terms of layout.

a negative point about taft relating to the dorms

all of the boys dorms are in one place (raised above the main building) like an apartment building. so you dont get the variety of choices and different dorm experiences that one would get at another school.
