Taft school thread

I am the parent of an entering sophomore at Taft in 2015. I am a little intimidated by the threads that I have read about things like ´Taft Hatred´and many students being miserable at the school. Can a Taft parent help me clearing this out? Why do students post such harsh comments about the school?

Hello @Happymom123 and welcome to the forum.

I saw your previous post on 8/3 and it puzzled me a bit. When I add that to this one it makes me ask the obvious question - did you our your child visit Taft before you accepted their offer of admission? To me these seem like things that would have been flushed out during the visit/interview/decision process. Perhaps there are circumstances that made that impossible.

Regardless - I have a child at BS (not Taft) and my wife went to Taft (many years ago!). It was one of the schools my child considered but ended up going elsewhere and is very happy. I can tell you that the decision not to attend was not based on anything that made us feel like they would be miserable there. And my wife looks at Taft as some of the best years of her life. She made lifelong friends and if she could do it over again would do so in a heartbeat.

So I hope someone with more recent insight into the environment at Taft can help you more but I can tell you having been on the Taft campus several times I would have had no hesitation sending my child there.

Best of luck to you and your child!

Hello @howdoipayforthis,thank you so much for your reply. I did visit Taft’s campus and liked it. People seemed nice, but on my visit day the students were at a special meeting and I didn’t get to see many of them. Anyway I think that during a visit day you can’t really see what goes on a daily basis at the school. What worries me is that I don’t see this kind of comments about any other boarding school here in CC. May I ask why your child didn’t choose Taft? And since she goes to BS maybe she has an insight of a peer who might know a student at Taft? it would be very helpful! I hope Im not asking too much! Thanks

Hello @ChoatieMom, since you are one of the most widely read parents on CC and seem to know a lot about BS, (other than just Choate) I wanted to ask you if you happen to know why the Taft school parents and students are not usually present on CC posts. For example they are not included on this list and don’t paricipate much in other discussions where most BS parents and students post. Do you happen to know a Taft parent or student? Do you have an opinion on this? I am a future Taft parent, trying to get to know the school, but it’s not easy because of the lack of information on the forums. It seems like they are not very communicative. Thanks fir your help!

@Happymom123: One of the most prolific and informative posters on CC was a Taft parent. If you search the archives for posts from ExieMITAlum, you will find a wealth of info. Her daughter has graduated and she no longer posts here, but the wisdom she shared both about Taft and BS in general was invaluable. I don’t know why another Taft parent hasn’t stepped up to fill that void. Perhaps you will become that resource for this board in the future.

A few reasons, not the least of which was that Taft did not offer us enough FA to make attendance there really possible. But my child also decided that they wanted a smaller student body, and was not enamored with the coach of their main sport.

I asked my child and they said they didn’t have any insight to offer either way about the general atmosphere at Taft. Sorry!

Hi ChoatieMom, thank you for your reply. I searched for ExieMITAlumn posts but could only find a few. I am new to CC so maybe I don’t know how to search for archives the right way. Could you please explain to me how to to do it? Or send me a link to her archives? I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you so much!
