tag into ucsb

I submitted my tag application September 1st and just realized I might be screwed. I meet all the requirements to ucsb econ/accounting except for econ 10a. From what I have read on these forums a lot of student are failing this last pre req that can only be taken at ucsb or uci. In my mind, I feel like ive been working my azz off the past 2 year just to find out if I get a c in econ 10a. which means ill never be able to get my degree in my dream school. Also, I know a lot of people are going to say that I can just change major, but what major can I possibly do. Ive been focusing on an econ/accounting and ive only been focusing on getting my pre reqs for that specific major.

@chuchgaguch Are you talking about taking the class at UCSB after you get in - and then not passing?

If so, I would cross that bridge when you get to it. Don’t get ahead of yourself. First step is to get accepted.

Although I did look online and see the dilemma. But look at some advice here. There are options:

Also, if accepted, you can likely switch majors.

Practice here during the summer:

thx for the cite, ill definetly study that ahead of time and btw im pretty sure ill get in with a 3.7gpa

If you don’t get a B the first time, you get two more tries:

@socaldad2, so all is not lost it seems. (It did seem a little harsh to toss someone on their butt so brutally.)

It still is pretty harsh, especially for people who would be great accountants but poor economists. They should give transfers the option of retaking some or all of Econ 1, 2, 3A and 3B at UCSB, and using those grades as well in achieving the 2.85 requirement.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if i can take econ 10a some where else like community or state college. Im gonna talk to my counselor about.

No, it is pretty clear you have to take it at UCSB. See assist.org.

assit.org (no course articulated must take at ucsb) that is for my cc. If a cc were to teach econ 10a, doesn’t that mean the class would be a transferable credit. therefor I complete all pre reqs besides pstat.

If it says must be taken at UCSB it must be taken there. Otherwise, it would simply say not articulated.

Dam! I was hoping I can find some kind of loop hole around this. or at least take it at a different school and get a C.

I doubt if you will find many CCC’s that offer a class similar to 10a. And if they do, UCSB may not recognize it as being equivalent.

UCSB offers 10a in a 6-week summer session. Anyone can enroll in the summer session. A prospective student could take the course during the summer between their first and second years at a CCC. Thus, before applying to UCSB they would know whether they got the necessary B grade. That might be a relatively expensive option since you would have to get an apartment in the UCSB area for a couple of months, but it might be better than enrolling at UCSB without knowing if you would get into your preferred major.

Also, students at Santa Barbara City College can take one class a quarter at UCSB. Thus, they could take the course any quarter before applying.

@chuchdaguch certainly, these sorts of things are worrying, and I, like you, would be worried if it were me. However, you have a 3.7. You have that MIT link. I think you will do OK. There are going to be a lot of students that just don’t bring their best game or aren’t cut out for Econ. Some are still sophomores.

Over the years, having looked at some of the prof rating sites, such as Rate My Professor and Bruinwalk (UCLA), I am still continually shocked at the number of students who don’t go to class. (UCLA especially.)

There are many reasons a student might not get a C. FWIW, the fact that you’re pro-actively concerned makes me think you won’t be one of them.

Hi! I’m a SBCC student so I don’t go to UCSB student but I live with some who do and are in econ/accounting. It’s hard. Ridiculously hard. But don’t get your hopes down because it’s not impossible to pass, and it’s not impossible to get an A. UCSB also has other tracts in econ (like econ math) so maybe look into those too to see if your prereqs would apply to those majors. My roommate last year graduated from econ accounting with mostly A’s and one of my really good friends is in the program as a junior right now with a 3.9, so it really isn’t impossible, it just takes a lot of dedication.

Thanks for the information guys. Its great to see( hear) people helpen each other out.
