I'm in the process of trying to get some things amended on my transcript so that I qualify for TAG. I took freshman English in 2004 at a college in my hometown and received a C. I was 16 at the time. I originally didn't transfer my units from this college to my current college because it was so long ago and I just retook freshman English at my current college and received an A in 2008. I have been given academic renewal for most of my other classes from my old college, but this one C is bringing my transfer GPA down so that I don't qualify for TAG. I researched this a little and I'm not sure what to do. I'm 24 now, and I'm pretty against the fact that a class I took when I was 16, when I was not even going to college of my own free will, can ruin my TAG application.

Additionally, I took an intro psychology course at my current school in 2011, which is a repeat of a psychology class I took at my previous school in 2004. I received an A in both courses though, so I'm sure it's not a big deal... but I'm not sure how to cancel out one grade with the other on TAG? Or if the grades even cancel out?

I just sent my old transcripts to my current college, so I have yet to try to get the grades cancelled there. Even if UC doesn't usually allow repeats of passed classes, is there some way to petition for an exception?

The newer grade will “cancel out” the old grade. But make sure that they are equivalent to one another, don’t just assume they are. I don’t think that there’s anything that you can do about that C. Since it’s a passing grade I don’t think that you can use academic renewal to get rid of it. C kill your GPA, I know.

I repeated that C class though and got an A. So, will the A be cancelled out or neither? I am sure they are equivalent courses. I know I can file a paper at my current school to replace the grade, if it’s applicable, but there’s no way to do it on the TAG application… I’m assuming because the two colleges don’t have the same system for numbering courses, so it doesn’t recognize it as the same course.

I would make a note of the failed course that you repeated in the additional comments section if they provide one (not in your essay), just so they recognize it as a repeat and replace the grade.

As far as you repeating the course you got a C in, if they do recognize it as equivalent, they will just ignore your a and count the C.

Well… subtracting the A and keeping the C, my ASSIST certified courses GPA goes down to 3.12… Subtracting the C and keeping the A, I have a 3.20 GPA. So, although it looks like I won’t be able to do TAG, I still want to try to do something about these grades… any suggestions on what route I should go? I’m sure there must be some process by which I can try to have my record amended because of extenuating circumstances and the fact that this was 8 years ago when I was only 16.

You can meet with a counselor and see what they say but I’ll be surprised if they let you do anything. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try though, they might suggest something.
