Hey guys,
I TAG'd SD Irvine and Davis for fall 2011 admission and i got approved.
I took classes this fall and passed all except my english EWRT 2 class with a D. Which is the second english requirement.

I know I'm going to retake it either Winter quarter or spring(as soon as i can get the class), but I had 3 questions.

1-San Diego requires you to complete both English classes by the Fall Quarter. Will my TAG be rescinded because I failed the English class regardless of me retaking it next quarter or next after?

2-Irvine and Davis just require you to complete both English classes as long as you complete them by Spring term. Since I am retaking it will I still be in good shape and TAG'd for these schools?

3- Even if my TAG is cancelled, will I still be considered a good candidate for regular admission? I am a Economics major and had a 3.19 going into my Fall quarter. I fulfilled ALL of IGETC except for my second English class. Am I in good shape?

I am addressing that I misspelled ‘my’ in the thread title thats about English Ha ha ha. Now, just please comment only if you have input on the questions I asked. Thanks.

1 - Yes, unfortunately you will not be approved for TAG admission at UCSD and will only be considered as a regular applicant. Recieving a D is considered “not passing” and thus ,by their standards, you did not complete English 2 by the Fall 2010 deadline for Fall 2011 Admission. Given your GPA I would say you have a 10-20% chance.

2 - You should be okay for TAG with these two schools as long as your GPA, including the D in English 2, is above 3.0. If, however, it fell below 3.0 it may be rescinded.

3 - I would not say you are in “good shape” by any means. Econ is a very competitive major at every school you applied to. If you do not recieve TAG admission to UCI or UCD I would say you have no more than a 20% chance of admission.

2) You should be fine at UCI/UCD assuming you pass the class in the spring.

3) Highly doubt you get in to UCSD. Last year, the cutoff was a 3.2 for non-TAG non-impacted majors (I don’t believe econ is impacted.) so if you got a 3.19, you weren’t going to be accepted. That GPA floor isn’t going down this year.

Yes, and unfortunately UCSD is a real stickler for GPAs, BUT the threshold varies by major (even if it’s non-impacted) - I was told last year that the threshold for Computer Engineering was a 3.23 (and got rejected for having a 3.19).

Yea, it happens. You know? I wouldn’t feel bad about it, UCSD … deserves whatever they get IMHO.

Thanks for the input guys. Although UCSD was the school I was most interested in, Irvine and Davis are schools that are up there in my Top Choices.

Grimes I hear ya, but remember the post I made around that time? The rep I spoke with specifically said for my major I needed a 3.23. Odd, I know.

can’t talk about tag, but Econ is NOT that competitive to get into at UCI, at least it wasn’t last year. That said, this year they’re a little bit impacted so that might change a bit from here on out.

median GPA enrolled at UCI for econ as a transfer was 3.3

I don’t know what my UC GPA was, probably something for a matriculation expert haha, but I guesstimate it was in the 3.5-3.8 range and I didn’t have TAG

I had As in both my economics classes, a fair number of business and accounting classes classes and I took statistics which probably helped as well given the fact that stats is used heavily in econ.

hey grimes do you have any idea what’s the cut off for biochem majors at ucsd? and if you chose a non impacted major and you still have a kind of low GPA for would you still be rejected?

@raacheeel: I don’t believe biochem is impacted since (I think) it’s part of the chemistry department and not the biology department. All bio majors are impacted, but not chem majors. This being the case, the cutoff is a 3.0 for TAG just like all other non-impacted majors. Without TAG, we’re not sure what the cutoff is going to be. Last year it was at a 3.2 and I would venture to guess it’s going to stay the same this year.

If you choose a non-impacted major and are eligible for TAG or have a GPA > 3.2, you should be fine. Below a 3.0 (TAG) or 3.2 (non-TAG) and you most likely won’t be admitted.

@raacheeel: Is normal biochem part of the bio department? I have a couple friends who did biochem (they’ve since graduated) from UCSD and I don’t remember them being under the bio department.

Is it the cell biology part that puts it under biology?

In any event, I have no idea what the cutoff is going to be for impacted majors. It all depends on how many applicants the school gets and what the qualify of the applicants is.

Biochemistry and Cell Biology listed under “Biological Sciences” is impacted, whereas Biochemistry/Chemistry listed under “Chemistry and Biochemistry” isn’t impacted.

There’s another major under Biochemistry Cell Biology its not just Biochemistry. I think it is considered a Bio science major therefore impacted.
