I have a question regarding tagging UCSD. Will I get into the Computer Science Major with missing prereqs, even though I can get TAG?

Probably not. I’m quite certain a requirement for TAG is having completed ALL of the prereqs for the major you TAG under.

TAG at UCSD only guarantees your admittance into the school not to your major. So if you’re asking if having TAG is a guarantee into Computer Science the answer is no. If you’re asking if it’s possible to get admitted to Computer Science without completing all your pre-reqs (with or without TAG) the answer is yes. Granted the number of pre-reqs you’re missing is what’s important. Plenty of people get accepted to UCSD with missing pre-reqs even to competitive or impacted departments like Biology and Engineering. Granted the more pre-reqs you miss the less likely you are to get admitted to a particular major and more likely you are to be admitted as undeclared.

Thank you so much. I’ll just stay three years then to save money and get all my classes out of the way.

Just to let you know: 2013 will be the last year you can TAG to UCSD for Fall 2014. So if you want to TAG UCSD, you’ll have to do it this September for Fall 2014.

Thanks so much.

UCSD is my top choice, but I don’t want to feel like I might lose other opportunities if I don’t wait three years.

Is it bad to just apply/TAG UCSD if I can get all my prereq and IGETC classes done quickly for UCSD or stay for three years, apply to all UCs I want to go to and not TAG UCSD?

bump? should i just do three years at CC?

Nobody can say what’s best for you. The choice has to come from you.

can someone give me pros and cons doing three years of CC instead of two?

I was in the exact same position last year. I got into UCSD for electrical engineering through guaranteed admission but was missing enough prereqs to justify staying one more year. Ultimately, I chose to stay a third year at cc because I didn’t want to regret not trying for UCLA or Berkeley. At times I’ll admit I’ve wished I was at UCSD and regret my decision, but for the most part I think I made the right choice and hopefully it will all be worth it when admissions decisions start coming out. Best of luck to you, I know it isn’t an easy choice to make

Thanks Integrant, I’m going with applying to UCSD and I’m not going to major in comp science anymore. I don’t think I will be happy nor do I understand the fundamentals of computer science. I’ll going with the econ/business route.

I’ve been at a CC for longer just because I wanted to make sure I wanted to go to a school I wanted to. As much as it sucks to have time pass by so fast, I’m so much more happier that I’m going to be graduating from a better UC than Riverside.

I don’t think I have to stay another for UCSD if I can pull at least a 3.5 for because I can get all math prereqs done in 1 quarter

UCSD actually cares more about IGETC than a few missing major prereqs.

I think anacondrea is right. If you’re switching your major out of the school of engineering and into a regular letters/science type major, IGETC will likely be an important factor in your admission decision
