Tailor my essay or be myself?

I’d say I’m stem/med oriented.
Say a college short answer question was something along the lines of “What change do you want to see in the world?”

Would it be better to align my response with my application as in make it career/stem related or be myself (for example if I decided to talk about race relations or just something I’m passionate about but not related to my application).

Thanks

Always be yourself. If they already see the STEM/medicine interest in one or more parts of your application, then it’s a better use of your space to show them something different.

Be interesting. Be passionate. Son managed to be both and weave a narrative that included his STEM interests.

It is surprisingly hard to successfully fake a persuasive personal essay. Moreover, a one-note song is not very interesting. Nobody expects you to have no interests beyond your academics.

The prompt gives you an opportunity to talk about things that you are passionate about other than your career/education . It gives you a chance to show the humane side of you other than academics. Write about the changes that you truly want to see in the world but be careful not too sound cliched.
