Hello! I just recently applied for the Taiwan Aid Summer Program and was wondering how selective the program is. If anyone could post the stats of people who have been admitted to the program in the past years, that would be totally reassuring! Thank you!

My sister got into this program 2 years ago.
Stats: -4.1 ish GPA with AP Calc BC, AP Bio, US History @ community college (equivalent to AP), AP English Comp
-Junior in high school
-2 time student of year award (each teacher @ our school picks one student in his/her class)
-CM 10 for piano completed
-1st chair flute

These are pretty much are main stats she had. I’m sure whatever your stats are that they’re fine as well. Gl on getting in.

awwww did the deadline just pass? :(((( it seems really really interesting to me

do you know any similar programs to this, please?

The deadline passed a while ago. I’m sure there are more programs like this where you can teach English; a quick Internet search should turn some up.

missngkitties, if you do go, please let us know how the experience was for you!
I was almost going to apply for it since I’m probably going to Taiwan anyway this summer, but I forgot about the app deadline .__. But it seems like a really cool program!

yeah I tried searching… but nothing came up Like I just put in teaching English China high school students summer

Most programs only choose college students so I wasn’t sure how to find those that accept high school students >.<

Oh, hmm. I can see why they would prefer college students; many HS students I know wouldn’t be mature enough to go abroad to teach English to others. And there are probably liability issues and whatnot.

Maybe search GoAbroad . com; there are a lot of links to teaching-abroad programs there, but I’m not sure if there are any that take HS students. Might be worth looking at though.

Does it have to be in Asia? Because I know some of my friends went to Mexico last summer with their church to teach English to little kids.

I prefer China the most since I am fluent in both Chinese and English, but I think anywhere is fine (as long as it’s safe) haha since it would open my eyes, expand my perspective and see a different world.

Yes, maybe the best way is just do a general search and click into each website… what a pain :(

I know that the application and notification of acceptance has already passed, but for future reference:

-I’ve heard that you need to do significant amounts of community service, so you might want to emphasize that in your essay and in your extracurriculars box.

-you apparently need a minimum of 3.8 for your GPA. Kinda crazy, I know, but that’s how my friend got rejected. I’m not sure how strong they stick to that so you should still try to apply even if your gpa isn’t that high!

As for the personal statement/essay, I wrote mine on my identity as an Chinese-American and how much visiting Taiwan and my roots would mean to me. My sister wrote hers on one of her service activities where she works with kids and we both got in. ^^

Connecting ABC’s to their Taiwanese heritage through service seems to be a major theme of the program.

And uh yeah, hope this helps and good luck! I’m super excited to go this year!
