Take a car to Berkeley?

I'm still debating whether or not to take my car with me. I currently live in Los Angeles, and those from LA know the convenient way to get around is by car. Should I just take it with me to school, leave it at home, or simply sell it? Any suggestions?

alright… so i’ve got a bunch of friends who go to berkeley and none of them have cars.
they all get around alright, but a few of them wish they had taken their cars. it’s just more convenient… and parking isn’t nearly as terrible as it is in LA, so that’s a plus.
try your first semester without it, see how it goes… if you find that you really ‘need’ it, then the option’s there.

Public transportation works well here. Sometimes walking is inconvenient, but I’ve managed just fine without my car. I’m from socal also; you don’t need a car in Berkeley the way you do in LA.

Mmmkays. Thanks for the input. I’m really leaning toward just leaving it at home and getting a bike.

I think the parking in Berkeley is horrible if you live near the campus, if you live off campus a distance than it’s fine. I have a car & drive to campus almost everyday since I have to go to work right after class but if you do not have that situation than definitely try to go w/out it. A lot of students here ride scooters/mopeds or bikes. Which is better because there are tons of places to park those. Also BART takes you everywhere, the buses are free for students & if you need to drive somewhere just use a zip car since the students get a discount.

I agree w/ pinkerfloyd…try it for a semester & see how it goes

just get a RPP permit and park on the street for $30 a year. Its cheap and its pretty easy to find parking unless you live on a one way street like dwight or bancroft.

I’m bringing may car, but I will be living off-campus. I want to be able to explore the cities nearby and I want to be able to go to Target and the grocery store quickly. I’ve heard that brining a car is a real pain if you live anywhere near campus. I’m living about 2 miles away.

if you get to know the area and get a resident permit it is really easy to find parking a few blocks from campus.

dont bring your car…bus/bart/bike is easiest…or buy a scooter!
