Take a Chance on Me!

This is copied (and edited) from post in Cornell:

Hello comrades,

I am a rising senior intending to apply EA to UChicago. I waited until new SAT scores came out to ask you all for your best admissions guesses.

UW GPA: 3.71

W GPA: 5.05 (completely different scale relative to what I've seen floating around CC)

Rank: Top 5%

SAT: 2240 Superscore w/ 790 Math 770 Writing 680 Reading

AP Classes Taken:

Sophomore: AP Bio (5), AP HuG (4), AP Psych (4)

Junior: AP Calculus BC, AP English Language, AP Computer Science, AP U.S. History, AP Art History

Senior (pending): AP Government (American and Comparative), AP Economics (Micro and Macro), AP Stats, AP Environmental Science, AP Euro

ECs:

Captain of school's academic teams (2.5 years participating, 1 year as captain):

-made it to championship game of tv academic game and greatly contributed to team success
-3rd place finish in countywide competition
-plans to found school team for a statewide circuit bowl league

VP of social studies honor society (2 year member, 1 year officer)

Competitor and tutor for four years in math honor society:

-two trophies including one at a state level competition

NHS (2.5 years)

DECA member (1 year)

Pretty confident in my essay abilities as well as my potential rec letters. I actually wrote about 90% of my main essay and the six or seven people I've shown it to loved it.

Other fun stuff:

Whether or not it matters, I'm a white male. No strange hooks. I haven't taken the SAT IIs yet but I'll probably take Math II and Bio M.

Oh, I also plan on majoring in Computer Science.and Economics.

GPA is going to hold you back. Your ecs are pretty good but not fantastic. Your course load is great. If it weren’t for the GPA you’d have a decent shot…but who knows? There is always a chance!

GPA and extracurriculars seem a bit weak. (you don’t cover a broad spectrum in extracurriculars) But if your essay is super good, you’ll have a chance!

I got deferred with a 22 ACT. I think you’re good. :)

Rbouwens. Quite frankly, if they don’t accept you EA, you will be deferred. Uchicago barely rejects in the early round. So stop spamming the uchicago forums with the same post.

wow your competition record is amazing!!!

You look great bro. Look forward to seeing you become a maroon.

Thanks for all of the feedback, guys! A few things to add (if they even matter):

-I got a minimum wage job for a food service company at a local college. It’s nothing special or anything (it pays for the random crap I like to buy). Is it worthwhile to put on a college resume (I never thought I’d have a job, the opportunity came out of the blue, and to be honest I’m pretty damn proud of my work)

-As of today (I got my AP scores today), I am an AP National Scholar. What does this mean/what weight (if any) does this carry? (5 on APUSH, Calc BC/AB subscore, and Computer Science, 4 on English and Art History)

@sa0209,

that’s mean -_-

Sorry! T.T I just was a bit annoyed when I saw the same post on like 6 threads in a row…

It is annoying and not at all helpful! She/he should be banned unless she/he contributes something that is useful and does not mislead applicants.

sa0209, actually there were many qualified applicants who were rejected from UChicago during last year’s EA round. UChicago is holistic and they do look at the whole person.

OP, don’t lose faith. Apply and know that you will be thoroughly considered, test scores/GPA aside.

^there is no possible way you have any proof for the fact that many qualified applicants were rejected from EA.

Do you really need proof of that?

At an elite school, there are always many qualified applicants who get rejected.

I mean specifically for EA! Those rejected in EA likely have much much lower credentials than those rejected in RD.

I think that’s false… Especially for a school like Chicago.

Applicants are most likely around the same level for both EA and RD.

The EA and RD pools are probably the same, the rejection rate is probably much lower for the EA round

A small bump for EA at UChicago, but not that much. According to NYT, UChicago’s EA admission rate was about 17.5% with its overall rate about 13.85%.

PAGRok, there were kids with 30+ ACTs who were rejected EA. It’s a crapshoot for everyone! They have enough applicants where they can pick and choose who they want, stellar test scores aside.

for the record, you can’t look at a kid’s gpa and decide whether or not he/she has a chance, because gpa’s arent standarized. but you CAN look at what percent ranking in their school their gpa is and say if they have a shot. most students have to be in at least the top 10%, sometimes top 20%, unless they go to a school with a reputation for everyone being talented. Being in the top 10% is usually just a check mark, then because they have so many students applying who were in the top 10% of their school, extracurriculars, test scores, and essays (especially essays nowadays at uchicago!) come into play.
source: I am someone who would have been bashed for my gpa stats if I had posted them on this website, but my gpa was good in comparison to my classmates (who have a reputation for competition) when advanced classes and ranking were taken into account.
