thanks, i have a question though, do most of these schools take the highest combined SAT or the single sitting?

What's up guys? Since 7th grade, I have been 110% sure that medicine is the field I want to go into. Thus, I really would like to become a doctor through these combined programs; getting to a medical school without the stress and competition of undergrad school/MCATs is very appealing to me. Below are my stats (sorry I posted every single thing humanly possible). So far, Rice/Baylor and USC have been catching my attention. I, however, do not know how competitive these two programs seem, and I am open to new suggestions on what I should do to up my chances/on where I should apply. Any words, even a couple, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot for your help.

There are times when your resume comes off as slightly pretentious; it's not just you, I notice this happening with many applicants. I think it's just a natural effect of the application process getting so competitive and people wanting to show themselves in the best light. I hope I'm not offending you, but here's my suggestions:

Don't say that you worked with a Harvard-affiliated hospital, that fact isn't really relevant to your research experience.

Published poet and writer? If it's an actually meaningful competition or publication that has some selectivity, put it down. Otherwise leave it out.

Don't say "selected" for NYLF...everyone and their grandmother was selected.

Also, what does "cadet for rescue squad" entail? Describe your activities, etc. That could be an interesting part if it was significant.

I also wouldn't put down the "bilingual" part...it's kind of a given that you speak English. Maybe include the Tamil part, but if that's your native language it's probably not an accomplishment to put on a resume.

That said, you have a lot of stuff going for you. Only trouble spot I see is your GPA, it may be a little low for an incredibly competitive program like Baylor. I wouldn't know, though. Good luck and I hope that you take some of what I said in consideration.

Haha a lot of what you said is true, asterstar, and I take no offense to it whatsoever. I'm really happy you gave me those suggestions, and I totally agree with you on the points you have made about my little "resume". I'm going to start my editing in a word doc., so I won't really change anything on this because I want to get others opinions.

The GPA is a bit polarized toward freshman year due to slacking; my grades after freshman year have been close to a 4.0 if not 4.0. Would that help/hurt in any way?

Thanks a lot. Any other people with comments/suggestions?

Colleges don't really care about freshman year that much. Still, it doesn't really matter if you had bad grades then, as long as there is an upward curve.

Thanks for the info. I've heard that from others as well, and I am hoping that is the truth.

Anyone else with suggestions/comments?

i have the same question does anyone have an answer???

it's the norm to take combined everywhere

i haven't seen any indication that it's different here..

You have a very good shot at combined programs (similar numbers to mine in fact). And I'm tamil. What up? Apply to competitive bs/md programs. Come to RPI-AMC 7-year Physician Scientist. I'm having a blast and success rate is sky high for the program. You can read my other posts where I discus bs/md programs and this particular program as well. Feel free to ask any questions. Your stats are fine though.

lol, im tamil too.. ok haha this is funny and sad.. your stats look really good, i mean on par with most that ive seen on this section of cc.. you have a good shot, i believe.. hey gangsta, Ive heard that up in RPI its like freezing and the location isnt very nice.. true or not and how competitive is this program? Thankss..

LOL sweet, guys. Like everyone here is Tamil.

@Gangsta: I'm def. applying to 1 or 2 of the schools allied with Albany Med. College,so I'll take a look through your older posts to get more information. Thanks a lot, man.

@Faithful101: I believe the ratio for RPI/AMC (accepted vs. applied) was 20 vs. 200, but don't quote me on that.

This is good; keep the advice/praise/what have you coming guys :-D.

Vanakkam. Yea so RPI's location is less than ideal. But, I'm from the northeast so the cold is whatever to me. And the thing is, I'm having alot of fun. We go out to Albany every so often, but with a good group of friends and stuff going on at RPI, there are parties, always some indian event if you're into that, and intramurals and stuff (i'm into bball, tennis, soccer). I play year around, gpa maintenance is no problem (maintaining all A's), no MCATs so going into my junior year, this summer has been sweet. My traditional pre-med friends probably don't like me cause I have been relaxing my past two years having the time of my life. RPI/AMC out of the other two AMC-affiliated programs is the best. Every student in the 7-year program is in the top half of the AMC class, all do research, getting invitations to publications/conferences, all perform on average 15 points above the national and AMC average. If you look at the top 10 AMC ranks, RPI bs/md students own it. It's the longest standing of the three programs. Distinguished graduates include the president of Brigham and Women's Hospital, affiliate of Harvard Med. and sooo many I know doing really well. Since they outperform the traditional AMC acceptees, they get good residencies. The best thing is you meet people you'll stay with for 7 years which is nice. Going into med. school, I can meet new people, but also go with my best friends. Gotta do two summers of research which is cool cause again, you'll be with friends. Feel free to ask away.

Oh and competition wise, about 350 applied past year, about 20 enroll, accepted number is around 35. The avg SAT is upper 1400's (around 1480), but SAT is changed now. Most of the kids in my program (applied three years ago) were in the top 5% of their class and the range of SAT scores I know is 1430-1580. Holler.

Gujarati here:)

Looks good!

I`m from New Delhi :)

Does the program require a lot of clinical experience? And what kind of fin aid do you get?

The RPI program like alot of other competitive bs/md programs is half indian at the least so gujus are welcome hah. Clinical experience is always a plus - no hardcore requirements like that. Most of the people have the basic volunteering, a few have research, and these are usually needed just to show an interest in medicine. As far as aid, there are need-based scholarships and academic ones like the Rensselaer Medal.

@Gangsta: Thanks for all of the info; after reading that post, it really convinced me that I should really apply to RPI--I'm a pretty lazy guy and probably will not get the high, high GPA in college. Thanks for all your help; I'm going to research the program a lil for myself, and then give you some questions. Thanks again!

Keep it coming! I need all the help I can get!

haha wow.. you make RPI sound really awesome...i wanna go. :) lol..gangsta can you post your stats, and anything really out there that you did during high school that helped you get in.. i mean soo many people have the volunteering, shadowing, interning, high GPA, sat, blah.. so does ram jag, so i think he has a really good chance, but i mean so many people do right, how do the admissoins counselors decide..

lol, i have those stats too, but i dunno, im really worried that i dont have good enough stats to get into these programs.. im going to be a junior next year so i still have one more year before i apply.. hmm, where else did you apply and which if any were you rejected or admitted for? and what made you choose RPI..

Lol, ya, im from texas.. so ya i dont know what snow is unless you count like flakes or ice.. but ya i maen even with location, everyone says that really matters to where it is.. hows the campus and stuff, is it nice..?

omg, haha i know , lots of questions, if you actually read all the way down here, you rock.. lol thanks.. :)

@Faithful101:

"lol, i have those stats too, but i dunno, im really worried that i dont have good enough stats to get into these programs."

I think that's like everyone's worries come this time of year; we all are about the same league with GPA, ECs, etc etc--so much that we think we're all nothing special. The key thing is to find something SPECIAL and get it shown on the app. This is especially true if you're Asian. Let's face it; what Indian kid doesn't want to become a doctor :-P.

@Gangsta: Yea, let's see those stats :-). Also, is there any difference between the 3 Albany Med-allied UG programs (RPI, Siena, <something else="">). I heard RPI was more research based, Siena was more public health, and the other is more comm. service. Is that the only diffrence? I'm sure you probably get a better education @ RPI also...but let me know. </something>

@Everyone: So...now I have the slight hopes of getting into a program haha. I would like to also know, however, my chances to the more nail-biting, fiece programs (e.g. Brown, Rice/Baylor, Northwestern, Rochester, etc.) where everyone dies. I'd probably choose something that's more relaxed than the above, but I'm just curious...you know...yea...you do.

Thanks to all!
