Take a chance on me?

Alright my stats:
SAT I (800 M, 700 V)
Chem: 780
IIC Math: 800
Writing: 750
Rank: Unranked (but around top 10%)
School, state, national awards in math and chemistry
Summer research at biotech corporation, two summers of hospital volunteering, shadowed medical-related field
Alot of extracurriculars: social-service organizations, music groups/ensembles, captain of academic team

First, the RPI program is the most competitive compared to the three. It is research focused, as I said, the students hog the top 20% of the AMC class. The Union program is 8 years and gives a MBA or MS, the Siena program is relatively new and is more humanity-based and much smaller/less reputed because of the undergrad school.

I chose this program because of its research focus, location to home, and very good reputation from medical professionals and graduates. I met a number of RPI bs/md alums and they all are very successful either in academic or private practice and happy with their choice. Even if you search RPI-Albany Medical College 6-year Biomedical Program (used to be a 6-year program), you'll see dozens of graduates.

Hi -

I really, honestly think that you have a great shot. However, I also think that at a certain level of scores, grades, ec's, etc. The process becomes kind of random. As in, after you reach a certain level, 0.1 extra on your GPA isn't going to matter. I think you've reached that level, and so at this point all you need to do is stay involved in everything you are doing and keep up the good work.

'But, wait!' you say, 'I want to get in! What am I to do about this randomness?'

Well, that's the part that generally comes down to the interview. So it's a good idea to start talking a lot - to adults, to people in authority, to people who make you nervous. Any by talking a lot, I mean often and with many, not just talking a lot! Also, talk to people who know you well, and see if they have any interviewing suggestions for you.

Best of luck in all your applications! I hope to see you at Rice soon!

PS. After the interview, it just doesn't get any more relaxed than the Rice program, IMO. Yeah, it's pretty chill. lol.

@jenskate1:

Thanks a lot for the advice and the encouraging words (especially "I hope to see you at Rice soon", haha); that was quite helpful, and I could see that "point" you were talking about through peoples' stats on CC. I guess the interviews are your time to shine to the school to show them that you really, really want to become a doctor, so I'll def. take your advice and start talking to those authority figures you mentioned. Thanks again!

what does it look like for the bs/mds?
i wasn't really sure about being a doctor till this last couple summers when I actually saw several surgeries. They were amazing. Now, i can't imagine myself doing anything else. On top of my chances, can people also post some of the hard parts about being a doctor and what obstacles there are along the way.

lakeside in washington

oh sweet i go to newport

You know, an abundance of little extracurriculars won't help you. A lot of colleges will probably just limit you to writing down your top 4 extracurriculars outside Stuy.

And stuyvesant is not the top public high school in America, LOL. or one of them for that matter. It's ranked 126!

I'm a rising junior this year and I was wondering if somebody could tell me my chances at Northwestern HPME, Rice/Baylor, and any other top-notch combined medical program. Here are my stats so far:

I also took Anatomy/Physiology sophomore year, which should help show my interest in medicine.

I've been reading on some other threads that some of these programs don't accept AP credit for the sciences, and will make you take the class over. Other than that, your stats look pretty good. If anything you might want to see if you can raise your GPA and rank a little. I've seen other people that are ranked number 1 in schools with a student body pretty close to the size of yours. Your research looks great, this will be very beneficial to you. Other than that I'd say you have just as much of a decent chance as anyone else.

bump bump bumppp

Hey CC members
I am a rising senior and I am interested in applying to a straight medical program because I really want to be a doctor. I was wondering what chance I have to get in the following schools (or at least will I get the interview).

SAT: 2180 (780 Math, 740 CR, 660 Writing)
SAT II: Math IIc - 780, US History 750, Chemistry - 730... pondering whether to take Biology also
ACT: 32 w/o writing and 31 w/ writing (will retake)
AP's: US History - 5, Chemistry - 5, AP Computer Science A - 5, Government - 3

current AP classes: Biology, Calculus BC, Macro Economics, and European Histroy

High School GPA: 4.375 (a little over 3.8 UW, and one bad semester which i got 3B's otherwise i got 1 B per semester)
Rank: I think between 17-19 out of a class of 780-790 in a competetive high school in Chicago suburbs

EC's:

School:
Math Team 3 years an will continue this year, and party of State team all 3 years
Scholastic Bowl for past 3 years and will continue
Science Olympiad 1 year

NHS Senior Year

Clubs I might join:

Outside School:

shadowed my uncle in the ER for a couple of days
Accepted into a 'Mini-Medical' school that was conducted by a physician at a local hospital

Combined BA/MD Programs I am interested in:

Saint Louis University
Miami HPM
Drexel University
Penn State
RPI/AMC
Northwestern HPME
Brown
Boston University
Cincinatti University (DAP)
NEOCOM
Rice/Baylor

Also about how many are selected from each school out of state (except UIC and northwestern) and are my EC's lacking?

how much will that 700 on Bio or the 730 on IIC affect me? (bumpbump)
