i have a c in chemistry from sophomore grade, but due to it being honors i still have 2.5 as the gpa for that class, does it look better to take a class over or just leave it, and take a different course, istead of wasting a class retaking it?

Just leave it. What's done is done.

Are you really willing to retake an entire year-long course?

It'd be better to take a new science class and try to get a better grade in it. Nobody's perfect, and colleges would much rather see you learning new material and doing well in it, or at least trying to do well, than you just re-taking a class to get an easy-A (which is how they would most likely view it, even if that isn't your intention). If it still bothers you, you could always take some sort of other chemistry class over the summer or at community college, or just take AP Chem junior or senior year.

I think this is where you draw the line between what is good for YOU and what colleges/parents want to see. Do you find Chemistry so facinating that you'd like to sit through the whole class again? If not, don't do it.

Retake. Will the C still be on your transcript if you do so?

i retook a 77.7% C for a B in math241 honors. i hate honors

what's happening is that, it's killing my gpa, my guidance counselor said, if i retake it, the new grade i recieve will replace the old one, but, it will say that i first had a c but retook it to get a a or b or wahtever

When would you retake it? If you do it over the school year, you'll have to leave out another important class (maybe in a subject for which you have a true passion or gift). Also, are you sure you aren't going to glitch another class in the future? I mean this in the best possible way, but would you then retake that class as well?

What I am thinking is that some students just don't like to consistently jump through the hoops that other people put in front of them. If this is a one time mess-up, then maybe you should retake it if it will impact your GPA and rank that much. On the other hand, kids do get into really great schools with a C or two (maybe not HYPS, but really good ones anyway). As long as your total file is strong, including recs, SAT's and EC's, your prospects are still bright.

If your nature is such that you will probably drop a few more balls before you graduate, then you can still have a great college future in a place where they are thrilled to have bright, talented people who were not completely perfect students in every subject. Many adults who are uber high achievers fell into just that category, BTW.

Just look at the big picture, and go with your gut on this. Maybe a summer chem class, if this is your only C, will work for you.
