take a little time outta ur day to pick some schools for me

Major: Mechanical Eng., Aerospace Eng

Stats

White Male Junior(well now senior I guess)
Gpa 3.8 gpa (unweighted), 3.85 (weighted)
act 23
Sat 1700 ish
Rank 11/88 or so + or - a spot, definitely top 15%
Took hardest classes offered
2 ap courses (only 2 offered) APUSH, Govt
Honors track for English
Accelerated Science track (no such thing as honors at school for sciences)
includes chem, physics, biology) plan on college physics/chem for senior year
Accelerated Math track (no such thing as honors at school for math)
includes geometry, alg II, pre-cal, calc
Accelerated track just means skipping the introductory course such as algebra, or IPS
3 years of Spanish (school only offers Spanish, only 3 years 1, 2, and 3)
I take many classes, I think I have about 21 credits right

I plan on attending a local university for senior year and taking some courses dual enrollment

EC's
Member of NHS (inducted earliest time possible), JETS (2 years, only let in soph. jun. and sen.), Academic team (2 years), Model UN (2 years), Muse Machine
Various Community service hours probably by the time application 100
Principal's list all through High School every quarter
Basketball 1 year but will not put it because it shows lack of com.
Varsity golf 4 years (Scholar Athlete)
Varsity baseball 2 years (4 years total) (Scholar Athlete)

Please list as many schools as you wish, good set of reaches matches and safties

Im not lazy, I have done much research and have visits lined up this summer and plan to apply relativly early. I would just like to see if you pick the same schools I have on my list.

All things being equal, where do you want to go to school and other than ME what else do you look for in a school? Size, etc.?

Im looking for a place that will challenge me
Good internship/reseach oppurtunities
As for size; 15000 would be the smallest I would go for, so maybe 20000-50000 students
A place with a decent rep (doesnt just have to be in eng. but as a university as a whole, doesnt hurt if it is eng as well) in the job world; good alumni base
Nice campus
D1 Sports, also maybe intermurals
Definitly want the college campus feel/experience

11/88? that’s a tiny class. Your stats and whatnot look good overall, but I would suggest taking the SAT again, or taking a couple SATIIs.

I would start with preferences like location, size, culture, distance from home, etc. You’re going to be able to find good engineering schools pretty much all around the country, these should be your “backup” schools. For the ones that you really want to go to, well, nobody can really tell you what those are, besides just taking a ranking list and listing off 1 2 and 3.

Anyways, with those things you gave in mind, I would recommend the school I picked, the University of Southern California. And I happen to be an Aerospace Engineering major as well. I picked USC because it’s a good program, but more than that, it’s got a wealth of connections in the LA and California area with tons of defense contractors and smaller aerospace firms. And you can’t beat the Trojan Family for alumni, both in support and connections. As for sports and the “college experience,” well, USC has a reputation in both categories for a good reason.

Unless you can raise that ACT by six points, OSU is your school. The middle 50% ACT range for the University of Southern California is 28-32 for accepted students … and presumably higher for accepted Aerospace Engineering students.

I think UMich wouldn’t be so bad. Maybe USC.

Echoing NewHope’s point, OP can’t get in to UMich with those standardized test scores.

Thank you very much for the responses, much appreciated.

Hawkwings: I think USC is a great school however it’s about 2000 miles away and just never considered it. I planned on going somewhere in the midwest to new york area. It just seems a little extreme to move to the other side of the country for an education I could get somewhere closer that I like just as well. Please dont take offense to that Im not being mean to USC, if I live in Cal that would be the first place I would look. thanks

NuclearPakistan1: I have seriously thought about applying to UMich, I just always figured because of out of state and a top program combined with my stats = a rejection

One of my schools has been mentioned; THE Ohio State University

Ohio State seems like a perfect fit!

I would definitely look at Penn State too, but you would need to raise your scores a bit.

But Ohio State seriously seems like what you are looking for.

Maybe Virginia Tech if you can raise your SAT scores.

I would consider Purdue.

Thanks for all of the responses

I already have visits lined up with OSU and Purdue (those are my top two choices thus far).

How is my chance with Purdue (legacy), father graduated from same dept. of engineering I plan to major (mechanical)

Can someone explain to me about admissions process with Purdue and OSU? I have done research but Im not sure I trust myself.
Do they both have rolling admission?
I have reviewed both 2009 apps and there is nowhere to check EA or anything like that.

Please suggest more schools for me (matches reaches and safties)

Penn State is a good low reach, if you can raise your ACT/SAT.

I would look at Georgia Tech, Michigan, Purdue, Illinois, Stanford and Texas

Michigan, Stanford and GTech are proably out of the question. Really Stanford with a 23 ACT? I think Ohio State is perfect for you.

I definitely agree with you about Stanford, UMich, and GTech. I looked into UMich and GTech and they both are quite expensive for OOS. The absolute most I would want to pay for just tuition is 27000. I dont really want all kinds of debt and dont my parents to feel a burden for me going to college.

Okay so what I have so far is

Reach - PSU,

Match - OSU, Purdue?

Safties - ?

Can someone help me out
Please throw some schools into the mix, but try to keep it in the midwest to New York or Pennsylvania reagion

This wont change much but I just got another EC
I got a job for the summer however it doesnt pay, but I do get some perks, am I allowed to put down that it is volunteer work or should I just keep it as a job. Do colleges prefer one to the other? I would think calling it a job would show responsibility to the college, but calling it volunteer work would show commitment to something greater than myself.

Wow everyone you complain hat cuz he has a low act and sat he can’t look anywhere amazing. He has a shot at Stanford for his sports and good gpa. If he had 3.3 gpa he would still have a shot. If your good at sports like him, any college would want him. They want people who make them look better and sports is what they want. And his gpa is so high he has a great chance. Btw what’s national honors society?
