Tutoring
During my junior year I decided to help students with their academics through tutoring. I wanted to help create a community where everyone had the chance for improvement and success. Throughout the year I helped students with their homework after school. No matter the subject, I put my best effort in aiding them to not only complete their assignments but I also made sure that they understood the concepts of the curriculum. It was important to me that no student should be left behind. The struggles that many of them were going through needed attention and I was not afraid to lend a helping hand. Tutoring has helped me show students that there are people who care about the education of others and that everyone should have the opportunity to be successful in their academics. This contributed towards the development of a school where all students have the ability to succeed.

Tennis
"Hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work hard." This is the motto of my favorite athlete, Kevin Durant. During my whole high school career I have participated in my school's tennis team. I had never been a part of a sports team prior to entering high school. A mentality of doubt overcame me when I competed in my first match because I knew that I lacked skill. I assumed that I was going to lose horribly. My coach told me that the source of improvement did not only come from skill but a passion as well. This made me realize that whatever goal I desire to accomplish must take dedication and fervor. I developed confidence in myself which became a great achievement throughout my years of playing tennis. Knowing that I would always push myself and persevere to accomplish my objectives helped me claim the award of having the most wins on the JV team my sophomore year. The development of a positive mindset continued to guide me, helping me letter twice as a varsity player my junior and senior year. Thus my self-assurance and passion for tennis justified the statement that hard work does beat talent.

Nation Honor Society
National Honor Society has significantly helped me appreciate and understand the values of leadership and acknowledge the different communities in and outside of my school district. I have helped volunteer for events that contributed to my school and the public such as school events, food drives, and fundraisers. Spending my time to better the community was not overwhelming or a burden. Instead, I learned a lot about the importance of dedication and civility. Knowing that I was participating in actions that helped improve society has enabled me to broaden my horizons and enhance my understanding of diligence. My responsibility in the organization was to aid the structuring of a great community. I carried out this duty through commitment and devotion. I hope to apply the skills that I have learned from NHS in my higher education and not only motivate but inspire others to aim for high achievements.

Violin
I have been playing the violin ever since I was in 4th grade. Participating in school orchestras as a child furthered my interest in playing the violin and led me to take private lessons. The practices and rehearsals that I attended during my freshman and sophomore years opened an opportunity for me to take part in a trio with other violinists. We presented our talents in front of local audiences and churches multiple times a year. The most significant experience I had was the chance to perform in a trio for senior citizens at a retirement home during the winter holiday of 2009. This experience allowed me and my partners to give back to the community and provide entertainment for the public. The piece that we performed has been rehearsed numerous of times and it felt rewarding to be able to play it for the elderly. Playing the violin not only contributes to my passion for music but also to other people's enjoyment.

2012 World GreenMech Contest
During my trip to Taiwan in the summer of 2012 I had the opportunity to be part of the staff at the World GreenMech Contest. It was a contest that involved young kids from various countries in the east such as Singapore, China, Korea, and Vietnam to engineer their own machines out of plastic pieces. My job was to help check-in the contestants as well as supervise them while they constructed their instruments. My responsibilities however consisted of many difficulties. A majority of the participants understood very little English and so a language barrier was formed. Communicating with them in English or Chinese were my only options. I was put on the spot and I had to learn very quickly as to how I was going to answer their questions. The job helped me break away from my comfort zone and try my best. Being patient and assertive in my ability to converse with those people helped me create a speedy process in making sure that all participants knew where to go and what to do. This task has taught me how to cope with pressure allowing me to contribute in pulling off a successful event.
