I will be taking 4 classes in the Fall. I am applying to UCs this Fall also. I pretty much want to have a really high GPA guaranteed this Fall (I'm currently at a 3.45 and I need a 3.5 by the end of Fall to satisfy the UCSD TAG requirement). This prereq is a Java: Data structures class, which will be tough. So, my question is if I should do this:

-general chem lab
-java:data structures
-2 GE's (specifically sociology and ethnic studies)

or do this:

-general chem lab
-biology (first one basically; Intro to the Life Sciences)
-2 GE's (sociology and ethnic studies)

In the Spring, I'll have 5 classes for sure if that helps. So, whichever one I don't take in the Fall, I will take in the Spring.

Does it matter if I take Java: Data structures in the Spring instead of the Fall? Will it hurt chances for non tagged UC's that I will be applying to?

Also, I hear that I must maintain the 3.5 to the end of Spring for UCSD TAG. How do they exactly know what my grades are by the end of Spring? If after the finals, I don't have a 3.5 then do they rescind my admission if I get in?

Don’t know about the first question. It seems that all those classes are actually prerequisites for a CS major so I doubt it would make much difference whichever one you take.

As for the second part, they know your grades because you report those grades and have until July 15 to send transcripts. As for getting rescinded, if you get admitted, you will get a provisional contract for admission which will state what you have to do to be admitted. So if that contract says you must maintain a 3.5 GPA throughout the end of the spring semester and you don’t do that, then yeah it’s likely you will get rescinded.

major pre reqs are better to fulfill so that that they can see your performsnce in youf intended major when reviewing your application

ok RamonaFalls, that cleared things up

philos24, I decided I am going to take my remaining java programming class this Fall

Hold on,

Taking your intended major classes are great, if you’re applying via a regular application as the above poster said so they can see how you will do in your major.

However, you are not planning to simply apply via the normal application for admission you are applying via a guaranteed admission. So the most important thing would be to take courses that will allow you to higher your GPA and you’ve said that this course is a harder course so I think I would take whatever you can in the Fall to raise your GPA then take the remaining courses in the Spring, that’s just my recommendation.

Matt4200, yah I’ve thought the exact same thing before too, but incase i don’t get in via tag, i’ll need the regular admissions for other UC’s that I’m applying to, so it might be best to take the java programming class this Fall
