Take a year off to improve GPA

Hey,

I'm really thinking about transferring into Harvard. I'm currently a freshman at a good university, and I have legit reasons for wanting to transfer. I would be trying to transfer as a sophomore for Fall 2013, so I need to take a year off. As it is, I have also been in talks with the coach of my sport and he has told me that if I maintain my academic scores and don´t let them drop, I will (yes!) be a priority recruit. The thing is, I was really sick during the test to one of my courses (it sounds dorky, but it´s true...:P) and subsequently didn´t do very well. This was supposed to be my guaranteed A, whereas the other course we´re taking is much harder with only a few getting good results. In total, my GPA will drop to 3.5 from the 3.85 I had.

So my question is, would it be wise to take a year off from school (as I would have to do anyway in order to transfer) and improve my grades? Do you think admissions look badly at that (that I had to retake tests)?

Any help would be tremendously appreciated!!

Where are you currently attending? I think that is a big factor, plus your reasons for transferring, rather than your grades alone, but that is just anecdotal evidence that I’ve heard (so I might be wrong).

Thanks for your reply batfan! I would though like to not give away where I’m going hehe… but it’s a small northeastern liberal arts college with a decent rep. But let us assume that my grades do matter, do you think that H would consider them differently if I retake tests, or wouldn’t it matter?

thanks in adv

"I’m really thinking about transferring into Harvard. " You make it sound like this is a small ,easy, sure thing . It is Harvard, you know .

fauxmaven: Haha yeah I am aware of that, didn’t mean to make it sound like it’s no big deal…
