As I am going to be a senior next year, I want to take rigorous courses to increase the chances of getting into my college of choice, and to challenge myself. My school does not offer the AP courses I wish to take, including Government and Politics: United States, and Macroeconomics.

I want to take the exams and courses by myself. Is it possible?

Yep, I did a self-study course this year- AP Psych. You can definitely do that and take the exam, but you have to be very diligent and hardworking yourself because no one is telling you to do stuff like in a regular class.

Yes, it is very possible with hard work and no procrastination.

Yes, completely possible. These APs are by no means difficult.

I don’t know about those AP’s specifically, but my son self-studied for AP bio and AP chem and got 4’s. He was pretty happy with those scores. He also self-studied for AP stats this spring… will have to wait and see on that one, but he’s pretty confident he’ll get a 5 as he thought it to be quite easy. It can be done!

The time to self-study APs is before sr year. It’s not going to help you much as a sr because your test results won’t come out until long after admissions decisions. Since you’re self-studying, you won’t have grades during the year or any proof that you are actually learning the material.

My daughter is also self-study for one AP exam next year. The school does not offer this class but she likes her math teacher and so join this club.

I know someone that did this. They set it up like a regular class. That is they found a teacher willing to help with questions and signed up for a study period assigned to that teacher. Then for that hour they went to the library and acted as if it was a regular class (without the lecture, of course).

Thanks for the advice!

I self-studied world history (4) and computer science (5). Didn’t ever take formal course in either subject. It’s definitely doable.

Oh, and I didn’t do any of that crazy stuff like making it a “regular class.” I just read the review book the weekend before the test as the extent of my studying.
