Take out Brown or Harvard? (Also, chances at HYP, MIT, etc?)

Hey. I was thinking about taking out either Harvard of Brown off my list but I'm having a very hard time which one.
bump...............

My friend goes to Brown and absolutely loves it. You'd have to visit both to make that kind of decision. They are both VERY different schools.

Well clearly you have a much better chance at Brown than Harvard. With average SATs (for ivies) and no exceptional ECs, Harvard is a huge reach.

i can see my SAT may be slightly above average, but my ECs seem unexceptional? wow competition must be tough?!?!?!

Many top ivy aceptees have national level/international level achievements. Realize that 60% of seats are taken by "hooked" candidates: recruited athletes, URMs, legacies, development candidates. The other 40% tend to have way aboves average stats and achievements. Then look at geography. LI is one of the worst places you can apply from. All in all, Harvard would be unlikely.

you never know, so you should apply to both and decide later

yea wow, competition sure is tough..... i still have too many schools, i have to take one out! dam............ which one......

just do both, whats one more application. I did 20.

holy crap 20?!??! wow.... but the thing is i have a brother who's also applying to same # of schools, and the app fees are jus gunna pile up like crazy.

Im really leaning more towards Harvard, b/c Brown's app is a little too much work, and plus i like Harvard's sciences ALOT more, but then, Brown is MUCH easier to get into the Harvard. I have no idea what to do!

whats your full list

Small chance at HYPM, keep Brown.

Princeton ED
Columbia
Yale
Harvard (or Brown)
Cornell
MIT
Williams
JHU
Tufs
BC
Stony Brook
Bing

*Is this too unrealistic? My guidance counselor said that where I'm applying is where i should be applying so i went along with him, but im still a little uneasy.......

like 7 or 8 of those schools are reaches.. you need more matches

Brown actually has a quite good geology program. I says Brown, but trust your instinct.

Has your counselor been frozen in time since 1990?

a while ago, a poster said,

Well clearly you have a much better chance at Brown than Harvard. With average SATs (for ivies) and no exceptional ECs, Harvard is a huge reach

no, u do have exceptional ec's, getting into all-eastern is extremely impressive, especially if you were principal cellist. For the amount of cellists on the east coasts, to be considered one of the best is amazing. congratulations and definitly apply to harvard and brown, but check out yale as well, their orchestra is amazingly good.

firstly, brown is not MUCH easier to get into than harvard. that's simply untrue. it is true that admission to harvard is slightly more competitive for most (but not all) cases. as someone who has earned degrees from both places, i agree with the folks who say to visit both places and choose the best fit--they are very different. truly though, i don't see why you should pick one or the other if you like both. don't sell yourself short.

What part of LI are your from? Competition is so tough here... :(

You know that both schools will offer very different college experiences. If you MUST choose, then select the school that matches your dreams-it will be four years of your life, you should be attending the university YOU want!
