My goal is to become a dentist and I am getting pressure to go to Case to get my dental degree. I know that Case is very well known for their medical school, but I also am interested in possibly going to Carnegie for my pre-med.

Is it better to take pre-med at Case and also get my dental their or go to Carnegie first then go to Case?

“Is it better to take pre-med at Case and also get my dental their or go to Carnegie first then go to Case?”
-You have to get accepted then you can make decision. You should go to UG that
matches your personality and wide range of interests (academic and others) the best and also accepts you. You did not mention any financial considerations. As you plan to go to Grad. School (and Case is one of the most expensive Med. Schools in the country) and if you are considering finances, it would be wise to choose the cheapest option. I have no knowledge about Carnegie, but Case is very well known for great Merit financial packages.

Do you live in Ohio or Pennsylvania? If Ohio, you should also apply to some of the better publics like tOSU, OU and Miami which will all prepare you well and can save you money for professional school. Pennsylvania also has a number of very fine schools that can also be less expensive.

In answer to your original question, both are fine schools with strong academic reputations and both would prepare you well for a healthcare profession. Don’t select an undergrad based on its professional schools because undergrad admission is no guarantee to Med/Dent school admission and more often than not offers no boost in admission. Go to the school you like the best, feel you fit in the best and where you think you can thrive both socially and academically.

At CMU it’s very easy to exist without a car and downtown Pittsburgh and its close in neighborhoods is really a nice place to be as far as urban campuses go. CWRU has mass transit opportunities to get most anywhere in Cleveland but the immediate area is not the best for walking alone, especially at night.

I know of several people that got very nice financial aid/scholarships to CMU and posters here on CC have discussed generous aid packages at CWRU in the past as well.

While you’re at it look at Pitt which also has a very strong healthcare career track and also offers generous financial aid.

Lastly, you’re going to have to apply broadly for Dental school including places like tOSU etc. As I said earlier, it’s too early to focus on a particular professional school- you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Pick the undergrad you like best, work hard, have some fun and worry about professional school admissions in a few years but do NOT base your undergrad selection on whether or not it has a Dental school or what its reputation is.
