take the AP test without the AP class?

I was just wondering if this is possible. Let's say I am very educated in some sort of field, such as Chemistry. First of all, would I be eligible to take the test since I did not take the AP Class, and second, how would colleges react with someone who gets say a 5 on their AP Test yet they cannot find the class on the transcript? If this is plausible, has anyone done it? Do you recommend it?

Yes, it's possible to take the exam without the class. There is no class requirement.

However, you have to find a school who will administer the exam. Just because a school administers one, doesn't mean they will administer them all.

It's a good way to document learning that you did outside of school.

Considering the number of CCers who self-study exams, I'm guessing that lots of people think it will improve their apps.

A lot of people take the exams without any legitimate class education. Self-studying for multiple exams is pretty common on CC.

Anyone is eligible to take any AP exam they want. Many students have received 5s on exams they self-studied for, so while it will certainly help, it's not exactly an uncommon hook. If you can handle it, then I don't see why you shouldn't do it. At the very least, it's a good way of learning a subject you have no room for in your schedule.

thanks for the replies! i should definitely look into it!
