i had like 2 units of unassigned credit for passing the ap comp sci test with a 3. But, in order to fufill my year of math for med school, I took intro to programming.

Would adcoms frown upon the fact that I had taken the comp sci class as an ap before and then took intro to programming in college or is it okay? also, is there a way to disclude ap credit from our transcripts? thanks

I have never heard that intro to programming would count as math. There is no math in this class. Ask your pre-med advisor, contact few adcoms at Med. School, but I believe you need real math to fullfill math req. Both Calc and Stats are easy “A”.

Nope, no way to not include your AP credit for med schools.

Once you send your AP scores to your college and have those credits reflected on your college transcript, they must also be included in your AMCAS application. Same goes for all classes you’ve ever taken at any college, all instances you took a class (ie, if you retook it, you have to report both attempts), all study abroad…everything, I’m sure you get the picture. Any class you’ve taken in college will eventually make it to AMCAS.

Another word of caution. My school’s policy for transfer credit is to show the credit on your transcript but not add that grade to your GPA, which I believe is a pretty common practice. Remember that your AMCAS GPA–the only one that med schools see–reflects ALL coursework, including any transfer classes or classes taken dual-enrollment/for college credit. (I’m a little bitter about this because it added 6h of B’s to my transcript, 3h for calculus 2 taken dual enrollment during high school, and 3h for intro English taken at a community college so I could take more science at my college).

The AMCAS also does not recognize +/- grading, so all your B+'s become Bs and your A-'s become A’s. I didn’t know any of that until my junior year (oops)–I assumed AMCAS used the GPA your school calculated, when really that is not the case.

First adcoms won’t care that you have two unit AP credit. Second, Comp Sci may only count as ‘math’ at a limited number of med schools, so you will be limiting your options should you not take Calc. And 3) (checking your other posts), taking med school requirements during the summer is rarely a good idea.

the reason i took the programming class is because on ucla’s math website(the university i attend)…it said that for those of us who have credit for ap calc bc, we can take a probably class, stats, and intro to programming…(<a href=“Undergraduate Program | UCLA Department of Mathematics)…but%5B/url%5D”>Undergraduate Program | UCLA Department of Mathematics)…but i guess ill take a quarter of multivariable calculus just to be sure that i dnt get screened out for not fulfiling the math requirements…

also, does the same go for english requirements? basically, i need 3 quarters of english right? and ap lit/language doesn’t count at all?

and thanks bluebayou for advising against taking requirements over the summer…im only takings the labs over the summer and i heard it’s not a bad idea if it’s at ur own undergrad university (instead of taking it at a community college in the summer instead)

While some may accept AP Lit scores, the vast majority want to see one year of college level Eng/writing. So yes, that’s 3 quarters’ worth at UCLA.

Taking lab courses over the summer generally requires a really good excuse (study abroad or NIH research during fall/spring, for example). Otherwise, adcoms think you are doing taking summer courses to lighten the load during the regular year.

“the vast majority want to see one year of college level Eng/writing.”

-Again, it is a good idea to contact Adcoms of specific Med. Schools. D. did for AP math and English. And her combo of (AP Calc + college Stats) and (AP English Lit. + college Honors English) was OK. Both Math and Eglish are very easy “A”, D. did not want to waste her time on them.
