the schedule that i had hoped i could get for winter quarter wouldn't work out, so i was thinking about taking 2 civ classes plus a hum and math class next quarter, however, i wasnt sure if that was a good idea.

I don't think this is a good idea- there's really no reason to take two civ classes at the same time as a first year. If you're looking at a major that will require you to take civ beyond the core, you might consider waiting, as it's kind of limiting to take two civ classes at a time in only your second quarter. You'd be much better served by taking more core, or even a different elective, than taking two civ classes at a time, as civ is much better if taken in sequence. There are probably plenty of other courses you could take to explore options in different fields, or classes in other areas of the core that would allow you to explore different topics. Remember, just because you can't take a class that is your first choice doesn't mean there aren't plenty of great classes in other departments or topics. Have you looked at class possibilities in art, music, and drama, or perhaps bio topics? There are a lot of options in these areas that would satisfy the core requirement in these areas, which you'll have to do anyway, and you're bound to find something that will fit your schedule.

If your schedule problem is closed courses, keep in mind that they rarely stay closed. You might go to the first few class sessions and talk to the prof about odds of getting in.

If you do decide to take two civ, keep in mind that they are pretty writing intense.
