Taking 2 nonconsecutive years off?

So, here's the deal. Right now I'm dealing with some major depression and I can really use some time off of school. I won't be doing nothing - I'm hoping to volunteer with mental illness groups full time. I want to do this for either one or two semesters beginning in the fall. However, I also want to take a gap year after I graduate and before going to medical school. This year, I hope, would be a year of more volunteering and hopefully going abroad to study art.

I'm a double major in Biology and Studio Arts and get fairly good grades. Do you think two years off would be too much, or would it be advisable to just stick to one year off? If the latter, then which year off would be better - now or later?

Anyone? : (

The most important thing is to beat what’s troubling you. The second year certainly won’t be an aberration.

One comment, however: it’s very difficult to apply to medical schools while not in the US, since you have to be available at short notice for contact via mail, phone calls, and the ability to travel for interviews.
