So I’m going to be attending Borough of Manhattan community college. I’m taking 6 classes while one of them being a Bmcc learning academy seminar class, the othe classes would be
English 101
Mat 08- basic mathematics (my math skills are poor)
Music 102-principles of music
Psychology 100- intro to psychology
Sociology 100- intro to sociology
I’m just wondering if I made the right choice in the selection of classes.
What’s your opinion on that?
Be organized. Attend every class. Read every assignment. Do all the work. Attened prof office hours as often as possible. Do not slack off, becasue with a schedule like that, it will be easy to let a couple of classes fall behind. It will be extremely difficult to recover from that. Personally, I think you have bitten off a lot, but if you aren’t working and can commit to doing the work, it might be fine. Consider dropping a class early on if it seems your overall work load will be unmanageable.
I sometimes took that many classes in college but ONLY when I knew I was very strong in a couple of the subjects, which would allow me to devote more time to the remaining classes. So let’s say you have a music background so that music class will be a breeze. Psychology and Sociology both may require a lot of reading. Do you read quickly, with comprehension and can remember things easily? Let’s say you’re a strong writer/humanities person so that English 101 (it’s often time intensive) won’t be too much of a challenge.
If the answer is pretty much ‘yes’ - you probably can do it. With a great deal of discipline. But if you’re still learning how to learn, if having a very strong GPA is crucial to get into a particular program/transfer to a demanding 4-year school, then you need to drop a couple of those classes. For the sake of your own sanity, if nothing else.
It is a lot. Math especially can be time consuming as you need lots of practice - even more so if your skills aren’t as sharp as they could be. I remember an especially packed 21 unit CC semester and I really neglected my statistics class.
I was taking:
Spanish I
Statistics
Data Structures with C++
Object Oriented Programming with C++
Symbolic Logic
Macroeconomics
My statistics course was a hybrid one that only met a few Saturdays a month, so it was very easy for me to fall behind. Most of the work was online, so putting it off to the last possible moment was easy. I got a D on the first exam. I eventually managed my time better, but you really need to be on top of things. If things seem too overwhelming, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to drop a class - especially if this is your first semester. The adjustment to college might take some getting used to.
This is going to require a very strong commitment to studying and school.
As such, I am wondering if you are planning to do anything else other than sleep, eat, and occasionally shower and change clothes. If you are organized and work hard and commit yourself to doing pretty much nothing else, and if you are able to always apply yourself to your work and not get distracted by anything, then it is probably doable.
With this schedule, expect all day Saturday and all day Sunday to be dedicated to homework until the term ends.
How many credits is that? You should have 15 credits exactly for Excelsior, but no more than that.
