So I am in the first semester of my sophomore year in college and want to take a break. The reason for this is not that I am lazy or that I am looking for an excuse to leave - the reason is that I have a small business idea and it cannot wait. I am not so much looking for advice on whether or not I should do it (although feel free to post your thoughts) - my main question is can it be done?
I am in an engineering curriculum which leaves me very little free time, and I am not doing so well. This is mainly because I am distracted by my potential business. When I graduate I want to start my own business anyway so this sometimes feels like a waste of time.
My business idea is not the next Facebook or Apple, but it involves something I am passionate about and I think it could have potential in the long run (I know that it will not make me rich any time soon.)
So, can I simply take, say, a semester (or year) off when this semester ends? Should I discuss this with my academic adviser or not? How likely is it that the college will let me leave and come back (btw I am not taking any financial aid and am not on a scholarship.)
Thanks!
