I’d like to know what are people’s opinions on taking a gap year. I remember reading that we can defer for a year or two at Brown, and was wondering whether a gap year before college is advisable or not. Do a lot of first year students do this?

Of course, in case of taking a gap year I’d have a thorough plan for it-- i.e. learning something new, working, traveling, etc.

Wish I did - as long as it’s something you’re willing to spend a year doing - go for it again, as long as it isn’t watching Sally Jesse Raphael and eating cookies :)

I know a non-negligible number of the students at my high school took a gap year, but I don’t believe any of them went to Brown after doing so. With that said, my roommate spent a year studying in France before coming to Brown, and he seems happy with how he spent the time.

It is my belief that a gap year can be really beneficial. You guys have been working non-stop for so long; you might need to catch your breath and regroup before going back to a really intense school experience. For the right kids, a gap year can be terrific. Here’s what Brown says on its FAQ admissions web site:

Thanks a lot!
It’s such a dilemma I’m really excited with my acceptance and just want to become a Brownie already! But then again, I’m not feeling 100% ready. (maybe I’ll never be 100%? :P)

Anyone else have taken a gap year/planning to/other opinions & advices on what’s “worthy” of doing during the gap year? :)
