Taking a P/NP class in the spring

If you are want to take a class P/NP (non major related class, but for IGETC) in the spring but you list it on the application can you still take it P/NP? Or are you expected to take it for a letter grade?

I took two P/NP courses last semester at the CCC. They were both IGETC science. I’m now at Cal.
