Taking a pre-req course at another school?

I took Calculus I already at my school. I would also like to take Calculus II since some med schools actually require 2 semesters of calculus. However, would it be okay if I take Calculus II at another school, which possibly won't give me a letter grade, but only Pass/No pass instead?

PS: I will take Calculus III at MY school, so I will receive two letter grades from Calculus I and III, but not II. Will it satisfy the 2 semesters Calculus requirement?

Are you concerned that your Cal II grade will be lower than your Cal III grade? Why not just take Cal II P/F at your own school?

No I’m not. But my school is in california and my family is actually in New York…so I don’t want to stay in California during Summer just for a summer course. So that’s why I want to take it somewhere else (any schools in NY)

BUMP~~~ thank you!

Why do you have to take it during the summer at all?

Why would your “summer school” only give a pass/fail grade?

What kind of school would you be taking the summer class? At a CC? At a good SUNY?

Hopefully those who know can chime in here, but some say that taking a req’d class at a CC instead of your regular school looks bad. I don’t know what med schools would think about taking a req’d class at a good university that is not your regular school.

another option…can you take a non-pre-med class in NY to free up schedule space in your fall schedule for Cal II?

^I might take it at either CUNY or NYU. I think they do give out letter grades, but they don’t count it toward my overall GPA…

I don’t think I can…because the only way to make my schedule go smoothly is to finish Cal II before the fall of my sophomore year (Because Cal III requires lots of pre-reqs and co-reqs…so I can’t take those pre-reqs and co-reqs at another school)

While your home school probably will not include the grade in your cum you will list it, with all of your other pre-req courses, on your med school apps. They will need transcripts from every school you have attended, including the summer one.

Just make sure you run the plan by your advisor prior to signing up for the summer course. It will be a waste of time and money if your school will not accept the credits, or it does not transfer as a Calc II equivalent…especially since it’s a pre-req for Calc III!

What Calif school are you attending?

I agree with the above advice…check with your current school first to find out if they will accept Cal II credits from a CUNY or NYU. Also, why not Fordham if you will be living in NYC in the summer.

and, Sk8rmom is right…even if your school won’t count it in your GPA, your med schools will see the transcript from the summer school and see a real grade.

Yea I think I will also consider Fordham, hopefully it’s not going to be too expensive.
I’m attending USC.

Ask your school if they will accept Cal II from these schools…get their answer in writing. You can do this by asking your question by email and saving their answer. Be sure to give details…school name and what the course name and number is at each school.

shiny, I know you receive significant financial aid at USC - the private schools you mention (NYU, Fordham) will very likely charge somewhere around $1,000 PER unit for a summer course - so a 3 to 4 unit course will cost $3,000 - $4,000. I think a community college course would be a better option for you financially - go to your Oasis account and choose *“Request for Pre-approval to transfer Summer 2011 course work to USC” * to get a community college (or NYU/Fordham) course approved for USC credit. It must be pre-approved, so start on it now.

Another option if your first semester at USC went exceptionally well:

I know you are considering a minor or two and trying to figure out how to squeeze them into your schedule. You already know that you can take up to 18 units per semester at USC for the flat tuition, are you aware of the “Academic Achievement Award?” It allows students with high GPAs (at least a 3.75 college GPA in 12 or more USC units) to take up to 20 units per semester for no extra charge if they need those units for their minors or double majors. You can apply for and receive the award for multiple semesters if you need those units. More info here: [USC Academic Achievement Award | Undergraduate Education](http://undergrad.usc.edu/renaissance/achievement_award.html)

Good luck!

Since it sounds like cost will be an issue, Shiny, do this as cheaply as you can. Do NOT borrow a bunch of money to pay for some expensive summer school class at a private.

Are you sure that you can’t take a “non-pre-med” reqt over the summer at a CC or cheap CUNY and have room in your fall USC schedule for your Cal II?
