Taking a risk?

For the supplement question “Why Brown”, i was thinking about starting with ‘brown’ as my skin color and then talking about what the university offers and my interests.

Is it possible that this way might get me into the reject pile?
Is this a risk worth taking?

I’m sorry to say that it sounds pretty dumb. I find it difficult to believe that a hs student can make this work, given the generally low level of essays I’ve read. However, I hate to stymie someone trying to be different I’m sure it is such a relief to read. You can always give it a try and have someone you trust to be impartial read it.

People get in on risks.Do it. Really. If you dont get in, youll think to yourself 'maybe my essay wasn’t as good as it should’ve been". Do it , because from your post it seems like this idea has stemmed from an inner creative streak. I would also advise you to delete this post because i think its a great idea, and no one should copy it.

@kaybee3 i don’t recommend it first of all, and second of all MANY people have thought of this already (me included, im brown (indian) as well haha) its funny and it would only work if the rest of your application has that same kind of mood/tone if its humorous, etc…
i would refrain from doing it cause it wouldnt be enough to get you in, and if u didnt do it right, it could hurt you alot

Thanks for the honest advice guys! I’ll see if I can make it work. :)

Matrixsurgeon, yeah my essays are pretty humorous. I don’t get what you mean by ‘if it works well with the rest of your application’, though.

I assume s/he means if the rest of your application has humor sprinkled throughout vs. this being the only joke you made.

That being said, my take is that unless race is a central tenet of that essay (e.g. “what the university offers and your interests” are diversity and the ability to study sociology/history/psych of race relations) I personally wouldn’t make the joke. As a Brown alumnus, the whole “Brown is a color” joke is really, really played out, especially when the school is of course not named for the color but for Nicholas Brown Jr. [Nicholas Brown, Jr. - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Nicholas Brown Jr. - Wikipedia)

@kaybee3
i wanna be brown pretty much sums up what I meant by only vs rest of ur application…

Even if you did have humor sprinkled everywhere, it would be very hard to make it work IMO…u can take the risk if u want, but I don’t recommend it. Like I said earlier, if you somehow make it work, it probs wont do anything to improve your chances, but you dont make it work (which is likely, not saying anything but color and race is hard to make work), it could hurt your chances…

If you’re doing it because you think it’s “unique” – don’t. Admissions has seen everything, and given the tens of thousands of essays that pass through their office, I trust they see a version of this at least once a year. I would avoid UPS jokes, too.

Honestly – were you attracted to Brown because that’s the color of your skin? Why waste valuable words on something that doesn’t flesh you out as a person (pun not really intended).

Of course, in the end it’s your essay, and if it makes you happy to do this – go for it.

If you’re going to take a risk, I’d at least make it a genuine risk. If you’re not answering genuinely it doesn’t seem worth it to me.

no

seriously
