Taking a Semester in Summer before Transferring to UCSD?

Thanks for taking the time to read this post before I contact my counselor.

Being honest and complete with my information, I'm going to be failing a class this semester and will be getting an F. I'm aware that I can retake this class, but the only time I can retake it would be this coming Summer, a few months before transferring to UCSD.

I haven't been admitted though, but if I do get admitted: Will I be able to retake this failed class this Summer before transferring? Have there been any special occasions where this has been possible? Or, could I just not take this class and hope that my overall GPA is good enough to transfer? I'll be having 60 credits when I'm finished with this Fall and coming Spring semesters are done.

Be completely honest with me, am I lost for another year, can I take a summer class before transferring, or does this one F not matter?

Thanks again for reading thoroughly, any advice can be helpful.

Most likely not. If this course was a major prerequisite or your English/Math/Critical Thinking than it’s unlikely they’ll accept it past spring. I know most of the UC’s are strict on that.

If you fail the course and have to repeat it during summer, repeating it during summer is not going to help you in the admission process and you’ll be evaluated as if it’s missing. However, you can still get credit for repeating a class if you’re accepted and decide to take it in summer after the fact. If it’s something significant like a major prereq or admission requirement (2 english/1 math course) then it’s going to affect your chances of getting accepted or possibly make you ineligible. If it’s a prereq you may still be admitted with one missing prereq assuming your GPA is still competitive and you’re not in an extremely competitive major like engineering/comp sci/biology. If it’s an IGETC course, you’d need to make it up with a different course in spring and could use the summer to retake the original failed course and it won’t affect your admission other than in your GPA.

So how much it will hurt you really depends on what the class is and what your major is. The UC’s don’t let you finish any of the admission requirements after spring and they don’t consider any courses listed during summer FOR the review process. You can get credit for CC classes after acceptance and even when after you’re enrolled in a UC barring approval.

Thank you so much for the responses. I’ll tell everyone who has this dilemma that my failed class is Biology 120 (Principles of Biology) and it is a IGETC Science class. It’s whatever God wants from me and I hope to get in this year and make up this class in the Summer.
