Taking a semester off from University, Fin Aid still an option?

Student is taking this Spring semester off from the university (as recommended by the academic dean) due to some events that occurred at the end of last semester. He plans on taking 6 credits of courses at the community college near the university. Would it be possible to get any financial aid for those courses? Normally, the student has a combination of grants and loans from the university that goes toward his housing (but he works too, of course), so I wanted to find out if it was possible to get any form of aid for this semester, even if it's just loans, and what the necessary steps are to get it.

He has already registered at the CC and classes begin next week. Thanks for your help!

He needs to meet with the financial aid officer at his community college to find out what is possible. Six credits may not be enough to qualify him for any aid at all, and the CC might require that he be a degree-seeking student at their institution.

How much do six credits cost at that CC anyway? Can he come up with a part-time job that will pay enough to cover his costs?

6 credits would be half time & that should be enough to keep from triggering repayment of loans.

Many CCs don’t participate in the Stafford loan program, he should check to see if that is a possibility.

He is meeting with the financial aid office next week, but I know that this CC does participate in the Stafford loan program.

He is only taking 6 credits because it is the max he can transfer back that will apply toward his degree at the University. The cost of the credits is about $800, if he does have this money up front it will cut into the money he has to pay for rent at the end of the month. Does aid at a CC work the same way they do at the university? Will it cover CoA including housing, books, etc and not just tuition? Or is it dependent on the CC?

He would have to be a matriculated student (pursuing a degree) at the community college in order to get financial aid.

Will he be transferring from his current school to now enroll at community college? or is he simply taking classes with the intent of returning to his original school (may not be eligible for financial aid).

I agree with Happymom, that son should be taking a parttime job to offset the cost of taking classes at the community college.

If he is at the CC as a guest student, he is not eligible for aid, including loans. If he is registered as a regular, degree seeking student, he will be eligible for loans. He is only eligible for the remainder of his annual loan limit for the year in school as classified by the CC.
