I recently took the SAT Subject Test for chemistry and math level 2, and scored 800 on both. Should I plan on taking a third subject test? If so, which subject would you recommend? I am a sophomore currently, and next year I will be taking AP Biology, AP Lang, and I’m taking honors american history over the summer, so I would take either the SAT biology, literature, or US history if I were to do a third test. I’m not sure how much preparation I would need for these tests. I did not prepare a lot for chemistry, and taking math was a last minute decision, so I was very surprised at scoring 800s on both. However, math and chem are probably my two strongest subjects, and I would most likely need to prep a bit more if I were to take a third one. Is it worth it?
Forgot to mention- I might also take AP Physics C next year (depends on if there is enough room for me and if the scheduling works out) so SAT Physics will also be an option if it gets added to my schedule.
Unless you find a college that these two SAT tests won’t meet their requirements, it not worth it. There’s no upside, only a downside, to taking another subject test.
@HPuck35 I can see there is little upside to taking another but what is the downside? I thought you are able to submit only the subject tests you want to submit?
Georgetown is the only school I know of that recommends 3 subject tests.
@yearstogo Not worth the time.
As an FYI, AP Physics C falls faaaaaar short of covering the topics on the Subject Test. TBH, no AO will be dazzled by more Subject Tests. Great job on the 2 you have, but your time is better spent elsewhere.
No need to do another SAT Subject Test in sciences, but you may need to do another Subject Test in humanities as some colleges require/recommend one of the Subject Tests in humanities/social sciences.
AFAIK, that would be a grand total of one college - NYU
History/Literature might show expertise in non-STEM areas, but I really think the effort to prep/take one wouldn’t be worth the value.
Unless you’re planning on being a history/English/etc. major. Rice, for example:
“ SAT Subject Tests in fields related to proposed area of study are required”
Write a great essay. Concentrate on that.
I am planning to take SAT US history besides math and chemistry.
You are fine with the two exams unless:
- you plan to apply to Georgetown which requires 3 SAT II exams OR
- you are applying to a college that requests a SAT II in the humanities.
