I live in IL and have applied to several colleges for transfer.
Because of my family issues, I am going to have to be absent from school for about a year.
Am I allowed to take a year off and still have the acceptance valid for the year after?
I applied for the fall 2006 transfer, and would like to start school from fall 2007 or if I can, spring 2006. Is this possible generally?

Depends on the school I guess, but I haven't heard of many schools that allow deferrals for transfer students.

It also depends on the reason at times. For example, if you have to go to the army cause your country is forcing you, some colleges, if not all, let you come back afterwards. But you should check with all the colleges because it's too important of a subject for it to be answered broadly by us.

I know at the UCs, they allow you to petition for that. You have to have a good reason here. It should be similiar over there too.

you don't have to defer. You can just accept, and then take a leave of absence.

what's the difference between the leave of absent and a defer?

Deferment is where you postpone enrolling at a school, whereas leave of asbscence is taking time off while enrolled. It's a little tricky, so it may not work. I think it's best to be upfront with them. The last thing you want is to enroll and be stuck taking a semester when you can't.
